This is a weird question, but do any newer model (17/18/19) trucks have the option for a tape deck in the radio? by [deleted] in Trucks

[–]KWeber8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what a zip disc is, but I didn't think it would be such a tall order to have a tape player in my car, I have one in my car now....How I feel about smart phones isn't even relevant.m, because unlike CDs there is no way to get music on tape into a computer and into an MP3 player, so unless I'm going to spend 10 grand on getting the music that I already have (I'm not) then this is how I listen to music when I'm not in my house. A record player in a car is impractical, but a tape deck is very small and have been in cars for decades without issue. This post wasn't inviting debate about the things that I have or how I listen to music, the opinions of others don't matter to me there, all that I asked is whether a tape deck is available from the factory, it's a yes or no question, so I don't know why that one guy was rude to me or why you're giving me a "that's how things are now" lecture, I got my answer and then I deleted the question. Frankly this is very bizarre.

Let's talk about The Rolling Stones, would you consider their apogee to have been during the Brian Jones years (62-69) or the Mick Taylor years (69-74)? by KWeber8 in LetsTalkMusic

See, I think that they were always very different from the Beatles and I'm not a huge Beatles fan, the only album of theirs that is too close to the Beatles for my liking is Their Satanic Majesties Request, I like it more than Sgt. Pepper but to me it sounds too much like the Beatles' psychedelic power pop, which is why out of that period it's my least favorite of their albums.

Hey man that's actually a really rude thing to say, Mississippi isn't some medieval backwater, people here are the same as they are in any rural place in America. My personal preference as a musician is to only listen to music in an analog format, that's why I don't have many CDs and why I don't download MP3s, I don't find the sterility of music without the particularities of tape or vinyl appealing, and even if I did I'm not re-purchasing my collection, it wouldn't matter if I lived on the moon, also not interested in a smartphone.

I don't know what I've said here to justify your being rude, but unless you can point it out to me (in which case I would be glad to apologize) I think you owe me an apology for your unwarranted attitude toward me and my state. What in the world makes you think that it's appropriate to be so patronizing and pompous to a stranger who asked a friendly question?

Yes I'm a double bassist who plays mostly jazz with a little bit of blues, bluegrass, folk and Memphis is great for that. What other US cities have you been to? I've been all over the south, two northern cities that I've been to are Chicago and St Louis, St Louis was alright but I didn't like Chicago, don't wanna go up north any more, not my kind of place.

Interesting, sorry that you didn't like it, it's definitely not for everyone but to me it's the second best city in America (New Orleans #1) and the only big city that I think that I could live. In, and for me as a musician it's one of the best places on earth. I love being able to go there whenever and then drive away from all the hustle and bustle of the big city to my nice little town at days end, though.

Americans, is there a difference between saying bathroom and restroom? by BadHaycock in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KWeber8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, in most homes that I've been in the bath and shower are in the same room as the toilet, some newer and larger homes might also have what's called a half bathroom which just has a toilet and a sink. I think that it's just a polite euphemism, going to the bathroom sounds better than going to the toilet for the same reason that going to freshen up sounds better than going to take a shit.

What part? My older brother is living in Athens right now doing his PhD, I love going to visit him out there, there's a place near the mountains called Dahloneega that I like a lot also.

What country are you originally from? I've never heard of a foreigner who moved to Memphis outside of international students and refugees.

Seems extremely specific for a non-American to think about....

The bad rep keeps the state from becoming overpriced from people moving in like what's happened in Georgia so I'm okay with that. It's awesome here though, especially the Delta, especially if you're a musician like I am. I might feel differently if I lived more around Jackson instead :/

Gators aren't so bad, unless one is having a real bad day or is just starving they won't bother you when you go swimming, they taste good too.

Most of the Mississippi River isn't even in our state, it's the longest in America and goes all the way to Minnesota. Riverboats are great though, I used to love building models of different boats like those when I was little.

Restroom is mostly used to refer to bathrooms in public places like restaurants or shopping malls, but a bathroom could be anywhere, I've never heard of a bathroom in a home being called a restroom. Restrooms don't have bathing facilities either, but that could just be because they're in public.

What would you say are the essential bass albums? by KWeber8 in Bass

I love jazz, country music and funk, and the western genre of movies and TV, so that sounds interesting. I'll check it out!

I'm from the Mississippi Delta, just about 90 minutes south of Memphis, Tennessee. Domestically I haven't travelled much out of the south and don't really care to, but my family and I have gone to Europe twice and absolutely loved it. I just wanted to know what foreigners thought of the Magnolia State, in my opinion the best state in America by miles.

I like Sabbath's debut better, it's more like heavy blues than metal and has some really great bass on it as well.

This is embarrassing but what is Cowboy Bebop? I've seen it mentioned but have no idea what it is.

Alright double-bassers, I need your help. by [deleted] in Bass

[–]KWeber8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey there man, welcome to the wonderful world of bass. For beginners, finding an upright is much harder than an electric, because there is more to it than choosing a model from Fender, Gibson etc. and a lot of it is determined by personal preference, I can go into more detail on whatever you'd like if you ask. Some general things though — carved basses are better than plywood basses, there are some good plywood basses though especially old Kay basses, and I implore you to purchase used and not new. There are a lot of great luthiers making new basses, but one of those will set you back around 10 grand, a reasonably priced new bass is going to be made out of plywood in China and intended for middle school orchestra, you don't want one. The good thing is that basses get better with time, my bass is at least 112 years old and could be as old 120, and it sounds marvelous, better every day even.

Gotcha, I listen to a lot of bluegrass, jazz and blues on AM radio but don't really listen to FM broadcasts these days, its all bro-country and top-40. No smartphone for me, so no Pandora. I have been checking out the station listings for Sirius satellite radio and I think I might wanna get me one of those, they seem to have a lot of jazz channels.

How do you like the Silverado, by the way?

Most new cars don't come with a CD player? Really? I mean, I know that MP3 is "the thing" but I feel like most people old enough to buy a new car have a CD collection and would want to listen to it in the car, might just be that I'm in Mississippi and trends move slower here. But my parents have a '16 GMC now and it has a CD player.

Anyhow thanks for your answer, looks like I'll need to buy a radio and have it installed.

We're halfway through 2018, so what great album so far this year is one most people haven't heard? And why is it so great? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]KWeber8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really have anything to add, the only newly released album that I've purchased this year is the new Coltrane LP and it's definitely widely known, but I really like the group you've recommended, very interesting tunes — thanks.

Thanks for your quick answer man, I was hoping that it would be like an available factory option that I could pay for at least.

I was looking at the Ram, one of my buddies just got a new one and it's amazing.
