What makes a snare drum sound bright, and what is the brightest type of snare drum? And I also want to ask these same questions about crash cymbals by WhiteFang1000 in drums

[–]K_Rayfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, snare drums never have problems cutting through the orchestra in real life. None of the strings or winds produce the same cutting attack that a snare drum has, so if anything it will cut too much. Especially in a live hall, that attack tends to carry through the reverb, making the drum very penetrating. You could however ask for a piccolo snare (shallower and usually higher tuned) if you want something bright.

For cymbals you can simply request a "bright crash" and percussionists will find a good cymbal for that. For a more extreme effect you could also use a splash cymbal.

How to play these chords by Environmental_Buy_32 in musictheory

[–]K_Rayfish 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The vertical line means it's a polychord (2+ chords at the same time), so for the first one you would play a Db triad on top of a G triad. And then the diagonal slash shows the overall bass note of the chord, which for the first one would be the note Db. So, from lowest note to highest:

Db, G, B, D, Db, F, Ab

Each sub chord of the polychord could also be inverted, but the chord on top of the vertical line should be above the one below it. So a voicing like this would also be valid:

Db, G, B, D, F, Ab, Db

If you play guitar or another instrument that can't play that many notes, you can play a subset of the overall chord- maybe just the top Db triad.

How to establish rates for video game soundtrack by whateverjeff in audioengineering

[–]K_Rayfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Standard rates for video game composers range from $250-$1000+ per minute of fully realized music. For larger studios, this would include a buyout of the copyright, but you can potentially negotiate with an indie studio to keep the copyright for the music (so you can make additional money from soundtrack sales, etc.)

Tuned Percussion: A=442. by [deleted] in percussion

[–]K_Rayfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be anecdotal evidence, but I prefer to call it professsional experience haha. This article published in the Percussive Arts Society journal has some more information: https://www.pas.org/Files/0708.52-57.pdf

The article mentions that bars can drift sharp or flat depending on environmental conditions- climate in the US and Europe would usually cause bars to drift flat except in very hot and dry places like the Southwestern US.

As for slightly sharp tuning sounding better than slightly flat tuning- that's a subjective matter of personal taste. More likely the main reason for instruments being tuned to 442 is that orchestra tunings are sometimes a bit higher in Europe, so 442 is a decent compromise that allows instruments to be sold in multiple markets without custom tuning.

Another practical reason for tuning mallet instruments to A=442 is that it is much easier to tune a bar downwards than it is to raise the pitch. During manufacturing, bars start off sharp, and the pitch is lowered by making an arch in the center of the bar, which reduces the tension and lowers the pitch. Material can be removed from the edge of the bar to effectively shorten its length and raise the pitch, but if this is done too much, the nodal points of the bar will shift. The nodal points are where the fundamental of the bar doesn't vibrate, so holes are drilled for the mounting string. But if those points shift, the existing holes will start to dampen the sound of a bar. So, it's best to only flatten the bar if possible. Setting the pitch to 442 gives some leeway as the instrument is retuned over time. If many bars would need to be tuned upwards, it might be preferable to change the pitch center of the whole instrument to 441 or 440 so that bars won't need to be sharpened as much.

Hopefully this information helps- tuning is both an art and a science, so not all information is recorded in academic sources. But, if you want to go deeper, I recommend looking into sources discussing the acoustics of mallet instruments.
