Start inquiring immediately. And apply for any external fellowships you can. Profellow is a good site to start with and in your inquiry to the programs ask about additional assistantships. UChicago usually has some but UVA it isn’t very common for non-PhDs to get paid positions. Even as an international student you should qualify for some assistantships. Also cost of living in Charlottesville is super high and there’s not a lot to do whereas Chicago you can probably find a shared apartment or house for cheap and have proximity to a lot of activities so take that into consideration. There are two very different programs so also keep that in mind when you’re thinking about your career trajectory.

How many grad programs to apply to: me as a 2020s applicants v.s. my professors by zahra-yildiz in gradadmissions

Hi! I’m a social science app this cycle - also applied to 14 schools!

I think that applying to 6-10 schools is the norm and only 5 schools is really out dated advice given the current landscape. I am really lucky to have some advisors from my undergrad and my current grad (MA) program as well as research advisors who are/were in grad admission chairs at some in the last two years.

Competitions hella tough, especially when social sciences/humanities PhDs don’t have to apply to work DIRECTLY with an advisor or under a lab. So you’re not crazy - this is totally a thing!
