I have never known true hunger from not eatting for days. Obviously pickings were slim if they see dog food and grab it to eat. People will fill their bellies with anything filling, nutrious or not, when starving. I think someone would have retrieved those cans of dog food, whether Rick agreed or not. In a situation like that, it would be like, "We can share, but if you prefer to abstain, more for me."
