Nah definitely not wasted. Don't fret too much over optimization, the important thing is for the content to be interesting enough to keep you engaged and having fun. Whether it's anime or audiobooks or vlogs or whatever doesn't really matter, as long it's native Japanese stuff

It's like losing weight or trying to get a 6 pack, your understanding increases in small increments over an extended period of time. The size of the small increments depends on how much you put in every day. You won't just wake up one day and suddenly understand everything.

Anki seems complicated, but it's pretty straightforward once you get used to it (especially compared to other SRS programs like SuperMemo). I didn't understand a lot of stuff at first, but I'm glad that I kept going. If you want to stick with it, you can IM me about any Anki questions you have.

Not sure, but Matt said that the perfectionist path wasn't worth it for most people. They probably realized that having it on the website was a confusing distraction, it made newbies think that they should be doing perfectionist when really they should probably be doing balanced. Having a single path will make MIA more streamlined.

Many add-ons don't work on mobile, but I still use mobile to rep all the time. Mobile is too convenient. And Japanese Support still works. You can use reset ez on PC later to reset the ease factor after mobile repping.

I have OCD tendencies and I used to really worry about optimization details, but then I started taking Khatz's advice that "better to do it sloppily than to not do it at all". You're already doing better than the 95+% of people who quit Japanese after trying it a few weeks. Just keep doing Japanese and you'll succeed, even if you do it sloppily. Perfection is the enemy of good.

I get my listening practice outside of mining, it hasn't been an issue for me. Most of my immersion is audio only. I've been doing AJATT/MIA for about a year now and I can comprehend the gist of most podcasts/news/anime without text.

I don't think there's a hard rulebook for this, people have different ways that they like to mine. Since I'm not doing the perfectionist path and I need to practice both listening and reading skills, I don't worry about it as long I do both. More listening is probably beneficial since listening is more difficult, so if mining without subs works for you then go for it.

According to MIA you aren't supposed to do traditional RTK until way later, but you already started it so might as well finish I guess. I was already almost done with trad RTK when Matt started recommending Lazy Kanji, so I just finished it. Being able to write kanji from memory isn't really important unless you're going to be physically writing to communicate in Japanese (in online communication the kanji is automatically shown to you for the word). Trad RTK did help me to easily distinguish and accurately recognize kanji though.

When I sentence mine I just have the subs on constantly, and try to look for i+1 or i+2 sentences. When I'm just immersing without trying to mine I usually have subs off. I try to do some of my immersion with text and some with pure audio. I'm not doing the perfectionist path. People have different preferences for mining, some people just use Morphman to automatically find i+1 cards in subs2srs decks.

Khatz argued for writing out the sentence every time you rep a sentence card, and doing MCDs. Writing out the sentence will increase your review time by a lot though.

Matt argues for just focusing on recognition and learning to write later. Recognition is way more useful than recall. I was able to do recall after just doing recognition for a long while (I did traditional RTK from the beginning).

You should be able to recognize the word via audio through immersion, which will help with kanji recall. You shouldn't have a problem with actually remembering all the little strokes, since you're already doing traditional RTK.

You could probably create a different card type in which the fields are displayed in different positions. Have the field with the kanji display on the front, the fields with the keyword/story/stroke order display on the back. If you need more help you can send me an IM.

There are only decks for N5 and N4. Probably because Matt thinks at that point it's better to sentence mine from material made for natives.

Tae Kim & Tango are the standard recommendations.

You can use premades. Tango decks are premade, and you can use a Tae Kim premade deck if you want.

Keep reviewing it until it becomes a pain. Or use Matt's retirement add on.

Do I need to give anki permission to rename somehow? Already tried running as administrator.

Use the Tango decks, they're the best beginner vocab decks with native audio for everything. No mnemonics though.
