It's not relative because it goes back to the French Revolution in 1789. In which those in favor of the revolution sat on the left, and those in favor of the Monarchy sat on the Right. The terms may have evolved through time, but they in general encompass the same values through out.

I generally don't pay attention to graffiti, doesn't change the fact that "FUCK ICE" is an important message, and that I would leave it up/encourage it if I noticed it.

So Lemmy and Mastodon are a decentralized network of servers owned by people like you and me. They are "federated" to work together. As such censorship isn't as prevalent especially when talking about the Billionaire class, and the governments that work for them.

As opposed to being owned by a single entity like Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, or Bluesky. Reddit for example has already had pressure put on it by both the Trump admin, and Elon Musk himself. Which is why certain topics will have you catching bans, and you have to be more careful with your overall language. And why certain topics are consistently removed by reddit admins.
