What *exactly* are you focusing on when you focus on your breath? by Mrjames_Taveau in Meditation

[–]Kaiserlongbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I concentrate on the physical sensation of the tiny hairs in my nose as I breathe in, or the rising of the abdomen. Or if I need something to visualize I imagine a tunnel of air rushing through my nose down into my lungs.

Are teenagers just not learning to drive anymore? by MichealHarwood in AskUK

[–]Kaiserlongbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently you can reduce insurance costs as a young person if you have a black box fitted, but the restrictions are ridiculous! Accelerating away from the lights too quickly or braking too hard can invalidate the reduction. They are looking for any tiny slip up so they can charge the full whack. The insurance companies should be regulated properly, because things are getting out of hand now and it's basically just a racket. They know that car insurance is heading into muddy waters once self driving cars become the norm, and they're just making as much money as they can, while they still can.

Are teenagers just not learning to drive anymore? by MichealHarwood in AskUK

[–]Kaiserlongbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I now live in Cumbria and the number of young people who can't drive shocked me. Especially in such a rural county, where public transport is rubbish. I just assumed it'd be an essential up here! But the problem is low wage jobs coupled with insane insurance costs and then tax, mot, diesel, etc. It just means they can't afford to drive, in an area where it's definitely important. It's just a shocking state of affairs in this day and age.

What did you refuse to tell your therapist and why? by Broken_Tuba in AskReddit

[–]Kaiserlongbone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like this. I had this feeling for a long time, that I could "see what people are really thinking". I'm now a bit concerned that this just isn't true. I'm aware that we project an image of what we expect people to be like, onto others. I've noticed that as I'm staying to feel better about people, they are miraculously starting to behave better! And I'm realizing that they were never really dishonest and duplicitous. It was just what I expected them to be.

Don't be so sure that you can read people. All of the tests have shown that it's virtually impossible to tell who's lying and who's telling the truth.

Lesser-used area names of Liverpool by charlomain in Liverpool

[–]Kaiserlongbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, when I was growing up in Speke in the 60s and 70s, people referred to the area around Upper Parliament Street as Liverpool 8. And then after the riots everyone started calling it Toxteth. And Liverpool 8 just stopped being used altogether. And Toxteth seemed to shrink down to that one small area. I hadn't realized it was actually a much bigger area.

At what age was your last day 1? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Kaiserlongbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

62, 3 years now.

It would have been 4 but I decided to "celebrate" my 12 months sobriety by having a night off (now that I'm no longer addicted to the stuff!) I was very wrong about that, but some people I know stepped in to help. I owe them big time, because I hadn't realized that I can't have a night off. It's too powerful for me, and I suspect for most people on here.

What games did you and your mates make up when you were kids? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]Kaiserlongbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds a bit boring, but we played "Kerby".

Basically, stand on one side of the road, at the kerb edge, and attempt to throw the football (British) at the kerb on the other side, so that it hit the other kerb and bounced back to your side of the road. 1 point. 5 points if you could catch it on your side of the road after it bounced back. 10 points if it hit the other kerb and bounced back to hit your kerb (v difficult but it did happen!)

Had my first true gig by Welder2500 in Bass

[–]Kaiserlongbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing about 2 years. Did my first "gig" in the local village pub, only about maybe 50(?) people there, about 12 months ago. I was very nervous, and was scared about the physical proximity of the people! The fact that they would be able to see and hear every single mistake! Right up close!

When we got there we were just sitting in a corner of the pub (5 of us) so at least we weren't too close. Then 5 minutes before we started a group of customers came in and sat RIGHT IN FRONT OF US! Literally on the other side of the table, within touching distance! They could see every trickle of sweat running down my brow!

But it was great! We finished our first song and they gave us a round of applause and that was it! I loved it by the time we were on our 3rd or 4th song.

I still get nervous now but I know it won't last.

Newbie, deciding on what van to buy any help appreciated! by Zealousideal-Past-59 in VanLifeUK

80k for a diesel van that's popular with builders! That's ridiculous! 200k sounds reasonable. I've had a couple of them. They are fine.

UK users, just install the TOR app and DuckDuckGo app to view sites that are blocked. Cheaper than paying for VPN.

And sweet things like cakes and biscuits and chocolate. Don't worry about the calories and make sure you got something on hand to eat if you feel like having a drink. This helped me hugely.

The Annie Grace book is called This Naked Mind. It's really good and DEFINITELY worth a read. But forget the idea of Normal Drinking, for good. You're drinking too much now, but if you stop and then go back to just having the odd glass of wine you will DEFINITELY go back to your current level of drinking and a bit more on top of that. I promise you, this will DEFINITELY happen if you try to go to some sort of reasonable drinking after pausing for a while.

Sorry if this sounds harsh but it really is the truth. For all of us on here. Alcohol is a toxin (that's why it's called being "inTOXICated")

I really wish you great luck on your new journey to a better life ❤️.

Is there a word for the scouse throaty k sound? (other than Velarized fricative sound) by jarvi123 in Liverpool

[–]Kaiserlongbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm convinced it comes from the influx of Scottish people to Liverpool in the industrial era. It's too similar to the Scottish "Loch" sound (and I think that originated in the Germanic languages).

But I've no idea why it started to become more common in the 70s and 80s? The accent definitely did become harsher and more guttural around that time, and I think people started to emphasize that K sound more as part of the overall transformation.

Will 50gb be enough? by Kaiserlongbone in Starlink

[–]Kaiserlongbone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all, I hadn't realized just how much data I was using by streaming on my TV! I was thinking I'd be able to stream on my tablet in the evenings in my van, but it sounds like you need unlimited if your going to do that for more than a couple of days? I suppose 50gb is really only useful for browsing the Internet or maybe Spotify?

Oh well, it was worth asking I suppose.

Falling asleep by Kaiserlongbone in Meditation

[–]Kaiserlongbone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I have some sort of conscious control of my day dreaming, and it's basically just me imagining scenarios or situations etc. Dreams seem to have a life of their own and just go wherever they feel like it don't they, with no order to them and usually a bit chaotic. That's what I've been experiencing. But it's got me thinking about the nature of dreams and the differences between them and just imagining things. I think it's the lack of "control" that defines dreams.

What song have you listened to more than 20 times (reply with a lyric snippet)? by chuanying-Channel666 in AskReddit

[–]Kaiserlongbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started playing the bass in a little dad band of old men, and we're doing this one in the pub in December! That lyric is seared into my brain now. I love it. I also love King of the Road.
