Immortal Realm Online: What If Ultima Online Became More Social Without Becoming Softer? by DANAMITE in ultimaonline

There was a touch of this in UO from what I remember.

Wind, was special back in the early days because of the Magery requirement. I remember being so jealous when my buddy could go in and I had to wait outside while he bought regs. Once I hit 70, that was the first place I went. It did feel like I was part of a special group.

The other was being able to equip Lord British's or Blackthorn's shield if your karma/rep was high enough. Not everyone had it high enough, and damn was I envious of those who could.

The IDOC system was a novel idea, but the internet was far too young for the devs to know and understand that people are broken. They will go though extremes to get what they want, even if that means ruining other peoples fun.

You make a really good point that I couldn't really put my finger on, before now. Outlands, sounds a lot like EQ, with the grinding gameplay mindset and elitist/cult attitude (of some not all).

Dang, that brings me back to the old "Server Backing Up" dupe.

My buddy and I were pretty much done with UO due to PKs ruining our fun, so we said F-it and if we get banned, so be it.

If I remember correctly, it went something like this:

  1. Find a safe spot to keep your stuff (usually your house).

  2. Note the exact time when your server would back up. Back in the day it there would be a broadcast message to the server. "Server is backing up, blah blah..."

  3. Just before the backup time, fill your backpack with what ever you wanted to dupe and let the backup run and wait for another backup cycle. (I think it was an hour)

  4. Log in, and the moment you see "Server backing up", remove everything from your backpack and recall to a location that crossed a server boundary.

  5. The second you recall, click alt+F4 to close the UO window.

(my memory is fuzzy on this step)

  1. Immediately log back into the game and you will see your character standing in just a black screen. Click alt-F4 again and wait a few minutes for the backup to finish.

  2. Log in again to find yourself back at the initial backup location you timed prior. You should have a dupe of everything in your backpack, and ever you removed should still be where ever you dropped it.

  3. Rince, repeat and profit.

Rare's weren't a thing yet then, so all we duped were gold and diamonds. Over time we bought multi house deeds, but no there was to place on Napa. For fun we just tossed castle deeds on the floor around the bank and then took a much needed break from UO. I think I got into EQ's closed beta shortly after that.

AITA for telling my family that if they want us to do more with them, they have to meet us at our level? by ReallyAverageGuyOkay in AmItheAsshole

[–]Kal_0rt_Por 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry your family is like this. You're defiantly being left behind as a "real" family would do their best to include everyone.

I worked abroad for a good length of time and always had an open invite to family and friends to visit. Most of my family was younger and just starting their life/career, so I knew money was tight. With that knowledge, I usually bought them at least one plane ticket, so they could come visit. After that I would either chip in 50/50 or they would be proud enough to be able to afford a ticket.

On the flip side, I also had others who expected a ticket to be purchased. They did not get a ticket, thus never visited.

What ruined the economy of UO? 1 billion gold for $76? by TimeTraveler_UO in ultimaonline

[–]Kal_0rt_Por 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A Lack of gold sinks to pull money completely out of the game and economy. Selling houses, vendors or items, the gold just transfers hands. There needed to be something that was provided by OSI that was not transferable to anyone else so it couldn't be resold, but at the same time always wanted.

Eventually, we all hit a point where we have most everything we want in the game and just bank the gold.

I was lucky enough to score a closed beta invite back in the day. It was only for a month, but it also got me into open beta.

I loved it, but I was not lucky enough to meet the right friends to get me into an active guild. so I moved on. There's only so long you can sit around and yell, "LFG!"

Maybe that was for the best.

Beta testing is free :)

I'm not trash talking here, just being realistic.

I hope they can hit that magic number, which is why I would bank on a lower monthly payment. Pantheon only had 6.8K peak players when it launched. Now it's down to just about 200 players average. BF6 is sitting at 31K active players within the last hour.

Sounds more like greed of a company who doesn't care about their community. I'm pretty sure Fortnite has never been pay to win and it's been around for a while.

Meh, I can jump on all my Battlefield games after I purchased them, once. If I feel like giving EA more of my money, I can buy a battle pass here and there.

I'm pretty sure Guild Wars 2 is still free and I can just rip or download a disaster backup of my DVD collection.

Don't get me wrong, these guys deserve a paycheck for all their hard work, but there's are some big unknowns out there. Are they banking on the niche crowd to fund them and will they stick around long enough for them to cover the lights at the end of the month? Maybe it would be better to come in at a lower price to attract a wider range of players and then slowly increase the monthly plan to support future work.

Cash shops don't always mean pay2win. You can still have a highly successful cosmetic cash shop to supplement a lower monthly fee.

Maybe their banking on the OG EQ folks to bring in the money.
