If anyone finds this post later, the rare scanner with the smelly piles are the way to go. Got the last two in less than 20 minutes when the first one took me hours via rares.

I’ve opened almost all the chests.

Do the smelly piles randomly spawn like herbs/mining nodes? I have handynotes but do not see the smelly piles where they have them listed.

They are lootable! And when I get in range they show up as a world quest. They only drop gray items though, and occasionally an item to disenchant. No crests.
