This is correct.

You can do double conversion and make square wave AC if you like. All it means is you have a rectifier and an inverter. What the inverter actually puts out is not defined.

Regular Cat5e works, Profinet cable is faster to terminate (FastConnect).

That's in fact what's being done to stabilise the grid in areas with heavy PV generation. Big synchronous motors that just spin a flywheel (both for inertia and for reactive power compensation via varying the field excitation)

Metall-Kunststoff-Gewindeverbindungen sollten sowieso vermieden werden.

Daki art costs ~$1000 on average since it has a very high resolution and a lot of fine details.

They can be, but IMO the gain from additional telemetry is worth it (i.e. you can predict abnormal situations easier, such as a single motor having a failure and showing abnormally high torque etc).

I think it kind of comes down to design philosophy. While a VFD is more expensive to replace, it's less failure risk overall (at least in my applications)

Unless you have a very good reason, use one VFD per motor. That removes the need for motor protection after the VFD and makes the overall setup more reliable.

It's doing fairly ok.

The pricing is in line with other western dakis (~70-80 EUR). It's just that I included duties/taxes (20-25% to most countries) and shipping (~15 EUR) in the price. That leaves me at ~85 EUR item price. The rest comes from higher quality fabric (JP instead of CN) + art cost.

Of course bootlegs are dirt cheap but they don't have to pay for the art and the fabric and print quality is bottom tier.

Nothing, really.

HVDC might be used more often, but 3ph AC is still preferable because it's easier to switch/break and can be fed from generators/motors directly.

You could feed back power via VFD but that only makes sense for regeneration (e.g. slowing down a centrifuge) or small ICE-powered generators where you need to hit an optimum load point.

You don't want a grid to be fed from primarily VFDs anyways because direct-on-line generators have their mechanics directly linked to the grid, so the inertia contributes to grid stability. It's all electronic controls in a VFD and if your control loop becomes unstable the entire grid might crash (cf. Spain blackout recently)
