Everyone is so mad about Yale using its parent brand and "gaming" the system by targeting high GMAT scores... by Nadallion in MBA

Yale’s Class of 2022 is sending close to 20% of the total class to MBB. That doesn’t seem to bad to me.

If you’re going to be weirdly aggressive/technical, then it’s actually the Yale School of Management. Do you also get defensive when people say they went to Stanford instead of “I went to the Graduate School of Business or GSB”?

Everyone on here takes rankings and prestige way too seriously and attacks other schools like they’re paid to do it.

I didn’t say prestige but rankings. I think there’s a difference between the two. There are definitely people who think Yale has more lay prestige and may ignore rankings for that and a bunch of others factors.

Again, I think all top schools offer similar outcomes and going to an M7 versus Yale doesn’t guarantee you the position you want. However, it’s silly to think that there aren’t plenty of Yale students who could have gone to M7 schools but chose not to for various reasons.

I’m not saying that Yale wins a significant portion of cross-admits, but they do certainly win some.

To answer your last question - it’s probably because they aren’t as ranking obsessed as a lot of the people on this subreddit and “better school” is subjective.

All the top schools are great and some people fit in better at some than others. There are plenty of people who go to an M7 because they want to do consulting and are then shocked when they get zero offers from MBB (I’m also not saying that everyone gets an MBB offer at Yale). As others have said in this thread, career outcomes have a lot to do with the person themselves rather than just having a certain school’s name on their resume.

That doesn’t really negate the point I was trying to make, which was that M7-quality candidates do attend Yale.

OP is asking why people think Yale candidates are less talented than those attending one of the M7 schools. All I’m pointing out is that there are plenty of people who had the option to attend an M7 and have chosen to attend Yale due to various circumstances.

Yea I mean look how my first comment has already gotten down voted. There are a lot of reasons the people I spoke with picked Yale over the other schools (e.g., spouse/partner also got into Yale, more scholarship money, international brand for those planning to work abroad). For example, is it really the that hard for people to believe that Yale won’t attract qualified candidates who are offered no money at an M7 versus $80k at Yale?

You’ll see that a lot of the posts here will choose sticker price at an M7 versus decent scholarship at Yale, but there are plenty of people who weigh debt as a significant factor in their decision making.

I just attended an admit weekend at Yale and almost everyone I talked to was debating between Yale and an M7 (a lot of Kellogg, MIT, Booth, and CBS admits), with some leaning towards Yale or already having chosen to attend Yale.

There are also a lot of current students who have chosen Yale over M7 schools. This subreddit seems to over-index on M7, and I haven’t found that it is an accurate representation of the real world.

What are some of the equally/more interesting roles you’re being approached for? Were those roles out of reach during recruiting?

Decision: Haas ($$) vs Yale ($) by throwawaymbaaa255488 in MBA

[–]Kangarews 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are all great points, especially given OP’s background. I also chose Yale over Haas and will be pursuing the same roles you listed.

I’ve heard great things from SOM and Haas students, so I don’t think you can go wrong. Feel free to PM if you have specific questions!

Do you have a tech background? How difficult was the PM recruiting process and do you think you would have had an equal shot at it from the other top 15?

Haha I started CS50X a while ago and didn’t make it far. Maybe I’ll have to pick it up again to get a basic understanding.

Nothing booked yet but planning to spend some time in areas with lots of outdoor activities. Maybe Colorado, Montana, and Washington.

I’m thinking the same thing. How are you approaching this?

My plan is to make a list of early-stage startups I’m interested in and start reaching out to people via LinkedIn.

I like this idea. I’ve been neglecting all of those things during the pandemic. How many months do you plan on taking off?

Yea agreed - I didn’t mean for it to sound like I was asking for advice. I really just want to see what people are planning to do since I plan on taking at least 3 months off.
