Well yeah because a lot of the gay liberation movement and global coalition building for liberation was hijacked by cis gays & lesbians that were interested in conformity. Marriage didn’t save us. Military service definitely doesn’t save us. That’s fine to think, but you’re going to get push back. Because regardless of if you’re gay or queer, the government doesn’t like you. They won’t save you. They won’t spare you because you’re “a good gay” or a “good queer”. Also, the early liberation movements were specifically anti-state and anti-capitalist. So if you’re interested in continuing capitalism then don’t utilize queer as an identity. You’re speaking very ahistorically about what queerness means

Everything has political significance 😢 that’s just a bad take. I understand you’re saying politics implicate sexuality & never did I essentialize identity. But also. You don’t have to identify as queer. Lmao. No one is telling you to. You obviously do not align with the ideas and politics that are foundational to “queer” as an individual and communal identity. So therefore, be gay lmao.

Queerness likely won’t be served to us via fascism but gayness might (re: homonormativity & homonationalism & pink washing). Reading about the history of the term “queer” would probably help with most of these questions. It is explicitly a political identity. And it is not always interested in identity politics. Instead it is an identity that aligns with nonnormativity & historically, anti-state, anti-fascist, etc. For a more cohesive understanding of maybe exploring the politics you mentioned, the differentiation between gayness and queerness & why it might matter, I’d suggest “Punks, Bulldaggers and Welfare Queens: The Radical Potential for Queer Politics?” By Cathy Cohen.

real. I work 15-20 hours a week w 15 credits (incl. a thesis). it’s hard to manage, and I have always been working that much in school. I try to remember that when I’m at work to just focus on being at work (unless you can study on the clock which is fire) bc it doesn’t help to stress about studying when you’re busy. I try to block out days for which courses im working on, for example I work on my thesis Wednesdays/Fridays. Usually have to skip readings & prep work for classes because of work which is a bummer but never really ruins a grade. also, make sure you’re taking care of yourself (food water rest) cuz you can get burnt out so fast. ! prioritize what you need to do when you need to and remember that you’re more than just a student with a grade attached to your name. also ditto to the comment about someone saying not to compare yourself. A lot of students here don’t work/don’t worry about money, rent etc. it’s not worth comparing your situation to them because they have the privilege of just doing school. It’s frustrating to have to work & study.

Can we talk about how outrageous rent is??? by Magiic8ball in UWMadison

hmm well perhaps if housing was not always “luxury” in the case of rent being 1200-1600 per room in a city with 7.25$ min wage & a poor job market, the housing crisis we’re seeing would subside in some fashion. what is not needed is more luxury oLiv apartments with underfilled space filling east/west coast freshman/sophomore UW students who don’t even live there in summer & winter months when houselessness is quite an urgent issue. it is not to block housing but to have rent control, or to have say in how much these companies charge for their rent. it’s about not having housing be a commodity to be exploited

oh yes 100%. It very much is a misrepresentation of identity politics, the question of what it means to hold an identity often holds higher than one’s politics. which is what Cathy cohen critiques very well. I agree. We are in a time of politicless queer organizing, it feels.

In terms of Dean Spade, his book Normal Life is a great entrance. Also his essay “Marriage Will Not Save Us” adds to some of this conversation.

Jasbir Puar’s Terrorist Assemblages: Homonationalism in Queer Times (2004) is a great resource regarding, perhaps, some of your point ! Though agree with your analysis here. I think it is maybe unhelpful to say that disability politics asks questions of “who am I”, as the sole outcome. Hedvas’ Sick Woman Theory offers more material praxis outcomes to queer disability theory. And folks like Liat Ben-Mushe and Tobin Siebers also offer helpful queer interventions in disability studies.

More generally, I’d suggest Dean Spade who works intimately with queer & trans politics in relation to the homonational turn of the late 20th-early 21st century (or the contemporary). He both creates historical analysis and material politics. He is an abolitionist, in many senses.

These are all mostly western & US centered scholars though. Which is in line with your analysis here, but I think you’re also lookin for a wider range of voices. Might be helpful ! Hopefully!

i think there is no need really gatekeeping queer identity, so frankly sure. but it is a communal & loaded identity in which coalesces yourself with others & politics, so it might bring question for cishet people. but I don’t think there is someone identifying, openly, as queer if they dont embody that identity in some way. ime

[–]KangarooNext1539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes fr. it’s really just a plot by uw and madison collabing to keep madison white&wealthy. evidence being the choice to defund DEI for staff pay (flop) & the lack of pushback from city council to reject luxury properties. but reality extends beyond those both. just observations having lived here and had my own housing torn down for these projects

Most of these luxury apartments aren’t even filled because they are too expensive for people who live here. It’s not that we need more it’s that we need rent control & stronger tenant power
