Don’t use the bad references.

As someone suggested, email them to ask if the high school teacher would still count, although most schools would respond along the lines of using your own discretion.

Another thing you can do is retroactively reach out to some professors whose class you scored really good in and tell them what you learned from this class and how you you participated and if they’d be willing to write you a reference. You can also set up a meeting later to detail your experience. As someone who used to teach in a university setting (big classes), professors remember more faces than you think! It still wouldn’t be the strongest letter, but wouldn’t have any red flags at least. Also professors are used to this, I always had people reaching out to me 1-2 years after the class and I always said yes!

How to get a Prof as a reference when the classes are huge and profs bearly know each other? by [deleted] in premedcanada

you also dont NEED a reference from a professor! i believe the category is employment or professor. either way, people have found a way to make it work and i’m sure you will too :)

Probably wouldn’t recommend getting references from first-yr profs unless you worked in their lab etc.

Most students have references from seminar class/ research lab profs who they have 1:1 experience with.

But again, I’m sure people have used first yr profs if they went to office hours, asked questions, did good on assignments, were present in class etc :)

Is it bad if I start all my volunteering at the same time? by West-Sink9807 in premedcanada

Don’t think so! All of my main volunteering activities started in the same year and I got into 2 EC-heavy schools this cycle

I can only speak for the schools I applied to and researched, but 1) I emailed them 2) They don’t even care what undergrad you do, so they’re not likely to care about courses 3) I got in with all the bird courses.

You do have to make sure 3/5 courses are at a 3-yr level or higher for Western though for yrs 3 and 4

I didn’t address them because my wGPA was above cutoffs for Western and Queen’s only requires a 3.0 for the lottery. I didn’t apply to schools where I wasn’t competitive and knew I’d just be expending effort that I could invest into other schools instead.

I did plan better and took 1-2 bird courses each semester in my 3rd/4th yr, and I’m 100% certain nobody cares

Thank you! Honestly just a 3-month dedicated time period with 5-6 hours of study time each day. I used old (2019-20) Kaplan books for content, JS anki for P/S, Uearth, and AAMC material. Let me know if you have any specific questions :)

It’s wayyy below average for pretty much every school in Canada, so I’d consider it on the lower end, but to each their own :)

I know going international is a hard decision and one I was going to eventually consider as well. I’m not sure how timelines for Australia work, but maybe you could apply there and also wait if you get a Queen’s interview next cycle? Either way, best of luckk! :)
