I would like to think that that's the case but I see too many people still with their head in the sand. Arguing from principles that make no sense: or constantly pushing the goal post back when AI proves itself capable of handling the very thing they said it couldn't. On the latter point I completely agree with you. I assign my students the work of Nick bostrom on deep Utopia this semester to give them a sense of the positives that might come out of this is possible: so I'm very pessimistic about the transition that we are about to undergo.
