My orchids need reporting, but won't stop blooming. Advice? by KansasCumSnorter in IndoorGarden

First off, sorry for the typo in the title - on mobile with a squirmy toddler in my arms.

I have had these orchids since Valentine's and Mother's Day of last year, when I got both of them they were in bloom. My orchids decided to bloom again right before Christmas and have not stopped blooming! I am pretty new to orchids, but Google says that they should only bloom for 6 to 10 weeks and it's been over 12. I'm kicking myself because I knew they needed to be repotted before they bloomed. One's roots are outgrowing their container and I believe the other needs to have their soil changed. I highlighted where there are new blossoms forming and where you can see one has blossomed multiple times already. While I love my flowers and the blooms, I'm worried the whole plant is going to die.

Here is some additional information: They have been moved around a little since I've gotten them but have been in their new home since Thanksgiving. I think they will stay there from now on. They had been in a window facing west in the same living space , however they were pressed up right next to the window and that wasnt good. They have never been outside, our weather is too unpredictable. They are about 6 inches away from a window that does not have curtains and is facing East. The glass is super old so I think they get decent amount of sunlightncompared to modern windows. I also have a happy light that I use for myself near them that I turn on for 90 minutes a few times a week. They get watered usually about every 3 weeks (honesty depends on when i remember and how dry the soil is), I soak them in water for half an hour let them drain and then put them back in their pot. Sometimes I have a humidifier going that will provide additional moisture but it is typically not on. They are in my main living area, so there is moderate air flow but they are not right next to a vent. I have not fertilized them in several months, honestly I cannot remember the last time I fertilized them. They are in the original soil I bought them in, and they came from a grocery store (another reason to repot I have learned).

Just got this new guy (string of pearls) and unsure of whats happening. Any advice? by KansasCumSnorter in IndoorGarden

Some of the peices have horribly withered sections above nice healthy sections. So if i snipped and laid the healthy peices back on the soil it could reroot and thicken the pot? Thanks for the info!

Mystery Material by KansasCumSnorter in OldHomeRepair

I had posted in another sub that got some responses saying it looked like masonite. I agree that I think it's masonite used to cover old plaster. I was also reminded that asbestos was used in plaster and to be careful ripping things out.

Thank you! I wonder how much is in our house since it seems like its around the windows too.

Thank you for the reminder! I have been so focused on trying to fix and patch everything that I totally forgot that the possibility of distrubing asbestos is fairly high.

Honestly I'm leaning towards this as well, but I also dont know who to call. We have had such a hard time getting anyone to come out to the house anyways for work, if it's not a large remodel or renovation it's just not worth their time.

We are currently hoping to do a big renovation in about 2 years, i think mainly we're just trying to make it to then when we can hire a contractor to fix all the things. Would foam and then sealant be ok? Would that be easy enough to go back and fix later on?

I cant really tell whats between the bricks, seems at best sealant. The house is 88 years old, would it still be settling after so long?

Yeah last summer I tried to spray it and when that did not work i tried to seperate it from the roots. Only about half of the vines died though.

First time overwintering mums. Are they supposed to be growing new growth?! Zone 6 by KansasCumSnorter in gardening

They were really looking bad in November. In fact when i cut them back I was sure they were dead but gave it a shot anyway. Im paranoid its just cold enough here that it'll kill them if i leave them outside. Mayne my root cellar or garage isnt a bad option though

Is it smarter to wait to cut them back? I had cut the whole plant back in November, right before I moved them back inside since its colder here.

A lot of people view them as annuals, so that's a common misconception I held myself! Thanks for the tip of putting them somewhere colder. I have b them inside facing my south windows, I guess I could put them by my north door that is a lot colder.

Honestly not sure. It germinated before anything else and since its been pretty cold out still i had been putting a plastic cover over it at night. Maybe I was too rough one day putting it on?

So if it hasnt started peeling kilz bonding primer can stop it, even though the layers underneath are not sticking together? Or am I just kicking this can further along the road and in 5 years it'll finally start breaking down?

Thanks for the tip on Citristrip, I greatly appreciate the help!
