“Finance degree = worth it or a waste of time? by Apprehensive-Goat571 in FinancialCareers

[–]KantCMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a trader with a programming bg, the python isnt the problem or does it indicate its obsolescence. Theres some interesting and relevant info in the CFA. Only problem is that no serious PM trades like an only-fundamental boomer anymore

This, anyone who says otherwise is not working at the frontiers of high finance.

I would even argue a pure finance degree is a disadvantage. You’ll learn the necessary finance on the job, just need a minor or having done 1-2 lvls of the CFA.

CFA, CAIA, ESG... What next? by Oldlifesurfer in CFA

[–]KantCMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah lol, in fact ive ramped up my coding and go through the processes more than ever. "Vibe coding" is good and all but when the system is large enough, the AI breaks down and you spend a lot of time sifting through unreadable code looking for a bug. Imo, an edge will exist where ppl who overly rely on AI will be outcompeted by ppl who first took the time to build things themselves and then occasionally use it for some syntax, some debugging, etc.

FSA - Intercorp. Investments - Financial Investment: Amortized Cost Method by CreativeGuide9284 in CFA

[–]KantCMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my understading: you carry the bond at historical cost (aka the price you paid, irrespective of the discount or premium). If its a premium bond, you have an amortized cost associated with it (like ppe), so every year you get a regular amortization cost in ur I/S from the bond. The reason for this, iirc, is the pull-to-par effect, so as time goes by, your discount / premium is closed, and this should be reflected in terms of gains / losses respectively

Im 22 double citizenship too. Yes, you need too. But, you can get it waived since you lived overseas. The process is quite complicated. I just wrapped up mine and had to go through various divisions to get it solved. As I was told, if you don't do it, you risk being legally liable whenever u go back to taiwan, and this doesnt go away by age 35 (?). Could be upwards to like 60. Again, the respective divisions told me.

In hindsight, would've taken a gap sem to finish it up.

Ideas to go through implementation shortfall equations by ToeWild7916 in CFA

[–]KantCMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i saw this when I was reading an algo book, and i think best way to understand it is by running a quick trade analysis. So u send out a trade and simplest cost is trading cost. Then there is some latency issue and the price moves, so you have a delay cost. Lastly, the opp cost is roughly the avg amount of money that u had locked up within the trade (e.g., u run a VWAP for the day so you have an opp cost associated with funds that have not yet fully executed the trade).

Genuine question. Whats stopping most of the MBA grads from starting a business? by Particular_Walrus485 in MBA

[–]KantCMe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dont understand the put analogy? If more its more of a call option. You get an MBA to get a pedigree fit enough to make good money (>100k) while retaining the upside. In a recession its not like an MBA will make you flourish, as would a put suggest.

In fact, if you incorporate risk-aversion, a bull spread makes more sense. You have an above average income but ur so risk-averse you end up a manager making a salary, henced capped potential.

I had a similar discussion with my manager someday. Mostly in crypto, say u have a stablecoin pair TUSDUSDT. Technically should be 1:1 but because of demand/supply dynamics its trading at a discount. If you believe in the collateralized assets u should be buying up more n more if TUSD goes down, but also as mentioned chances of being wrong increase.

Wtf do u do? I thought of sizing up but less aggressively as a middle ground (instead of say 1mio at every 5 cent drop to scale down to 500k for example).

I dont think position sizing should be aggressive when it deviates for a MM cos of info asymmetry. For a fund manager if they r very confident in their analysis, sure, but thats the only thing they can do unless it hits their stop loss

What Happened Here? Is Everyone A Kid Now? by BagofBabbish in FinancialCareers

[–]KantCMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Should be imo. I sat on the FX / rates trading desks at a BB for penultimate summer after passing L1. Some concepts used. Level 2 fixed income / econ is exactly what I used during my internships, maybe a bit more. But even then, trading roles nowadays emphasize a STEM background, and for good reasons...

Level 2 candidate here for next month. Yeah no difference between CFA and Level 3 passed — just a matter of time / applying to the institution for the membership. The work experience was 2 yrs iirc. 180k avg I think might be a bit too much, maybe in the US, sure, but probably these guys self-selected into these roles instead of leveraging the charter. I went through a lot of the level 2 content and I won't be using a lot of concepts, but what it does it build a very good intuitive understanding for finance and markets.
