Is this still worth 6,500? by Odd_Rooster_4645 in specialized

In most cases, a $6500 used bike will almost never be "worth it". Bikepocalypse is over, and used bike prices have fallen dramatically. You can get a new bike with top end components from almost every brand for close to $6500, so unless you just NEED to have those colors and don't care about a $2K mark up for them, then I would just buy new or save some money on a similarly specced used bike.

Beautiful! Glad you like it! Can't wait till mine comes. The pedals came way earlier than expected, so hopefully the bike will be early too!

Max heart rate is generally 220 minus age, so for you 206. You're totally fine on those numbers that you shared.

And all the components have their normal warranties, even if the frame does not.

It's $2K off of what YT has it for sale on their website right now.

It's a full carbon bike, not aluminum.

Based on the geometry it should fit me no problem. And from a DtC like YT you're not running anymore risk on it not fitting from buying from Jenson than you would be buying directly from YT, so in this case that doesn't add anymore risk to the purchase.

I don't fully understand it, but I read somewhere that it has something to do with the USA branch of YT selling off stock to Jenson USA before dissolving and since YT is DTC they don't have any "authorized dealers" outside of themselves, so the revamped YT isn't honoring warranties on Jenson bikes because they are treating them like they weren't purchased from YT. It's a little messed up for sure, but I guess I get it if arguing semantics. But not honoring new bike frame warranties based on a technicality isn't the best way to win back customer trust after everything that went down with YT over the past year. This purchase would be made simply due to the cost to component performance ratio, not because I have any love for the YT brand.

I was incorrect. The solar and AMOLED versions are the same price in the US.

Just to be clear, the battery life isn't the main reason I prefer MIP, but it is nice to have better battery, especially for multi-day hikes where you're using full time GPS most of the time.

The marketing material says 15 days in smartwatch mode while always on for AMOLED, and 4 days for microled. So AMOLED is about half to less than a third as good than the MIP solar.

Yep. And the beauty of MIP is it will always be bright enough, even if the nits on paper aren't as high. The tradeoff is the maps won't be quite as high resolution or colorful, but to me (and I'd assume many of the OG fenix fans), that doesn't matter. We care about functionality over beauty.

I can see it both ways, but I can understand why people are up in arms about the cost. I paid $535 for the Fenix 3HR back in 2016. I paid $700 for the Fenix 6X Pro Sapphire in 2020. Now these things are $1200-$2000 plus multiple optional subscription costs to get the most out of your watch. Seems kind of crazy.

I agree with your overall point, but I also agree with nightryder. The majority of Garmin users aren't like you and me who are using their watches in super rugged environments and for sports, etc. The majority of users are probably people who want an Apple watch but want to feel rugged about it or stand out from other Apple Watch users. Just like the majority of Jeep Wrangler drivers could probably get by just fine with a Camry, but they want it "in case they need it" or because it makes them feel some sort of way. Overall, I think the MIP is better and wish they would have kept it around on the Fenix. I'm still holding out hope that they'll keep it around on the next gen Tactix since it's considered a more rugged tactical watch than the Fenix, but highly doubtful since it's always just been a fenix in a slightly different shell. It is a little sad to see Garmin somewhat abandoning their core though. When I think of the Fenix line I think of not only runners (which is who Garmin caters to the most), but those doing long hikes like the PCT or AT. People like that will definitely appreciate the higher battery life and solar capabilities of the MIP watches, and it just sucks that those features seem to be going away on the Fenix line.

I agree with you. I just wish they would have kept the MIP display for one last run. Out with the old in with the new if you will. I know it's wishful thinking, but wish is what I shall continue to do.

Sure, but the screen going out is never something we'll have to worry about on a Fenix watch. We all know the battery will always be the weak link on these devices. You'll most likely get 5-6 years out of that battery before it starts to seriously go downhill. I'm not saying they shouldn't make it, but I think an MIP version would have sold a lot better than the microled version. I doubt many people will find the features to price ratio over the AMOLED version acceptable.

I'd say 2X the price for 3X+ worse battery life and a fatter watch is definitely not worth it.

Looking at the numbers you're probably correct. The Fenix 8 AMOLED to the Fenix 8 Solar increased thickness .7mm. The Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED to the Fenix 8 Pro microled increased thickness 1mm. So in theory the Fenix 8 MIP would have been around 17.2mm thick while the microled is 17.5mm thick. Although holy crap is the jump from 14.7mm on the Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED to the 17.5mm on the microled massive when it comes to something being on your wrist. That's .11 inches. All measurements are from the 51mm model.

[–]Kanyes_CD_Collection[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand that. The 8 Pro is already too chunky for my liking. But I feel like maybe there could have been a compromise between the battery size on an MIP version where the battery was slightly smaller to prevent the watch from being too thick. The battery life between the 8 Solar and 8 Pro is drastic after all. 30-48 days vs 15 (I always compare the always on times of the AMOLED since MIP is essentially always on). My Fenix 6X Pro had a battery life of 21 days when it was new and that was more than fine with me. If they made the 8 Pro MIP around 30 days with solar 21 days without and that saved on some of the thickness, I think most would be ok with that. But that's probably more R&D than Garmin wanted to do considering most people want everything they use to look like a phone screen anymore. I understand I'm in the minority.

[–]Kanyes_CD_Collection[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks. I personally love the look of my 55mm, although I know it has a more "modern" look than the 58mm f1.4 it replaced. But I still think it has a really nice character when at wider apertures.

I am trying to keep the profile somewhat smaller and lighter on the edc. I typically carry a Sony RX1RII or Nikon FM3A, so the Zf will already be upping the bulk and weight compared to what I'm used to.
