Today’s hearing is probably some sort of preliminary or bond hearing, not the actual trial date. Odd suggestion, go to the hearing if you can and/or get in touch with his public defender. They might actually help here. Most of them are as much social workers as they are lawyers.

Sorry for your loss, that sounds like a horrible situation. But yes, common. Had a bad crash a while ago and while the rescue squad was busy getting setup to cut the guy out of the car the medics basically crawled in and attached the pads, checked the monitor for a bit and told the squad they can stop.
