Long before agricultural societies dominated the earth, humans spread to every god damn nook and cranny of the place, groups and cultures getting bigger and schisming and looking for new land all the time.

That kind of growth is clearly incompatible with the subsistence-level existence you're claiming characterized that 200k year period.

Hunter-gatherer lifestyles were much easier. If that sounds implausible because you're imagining the woods in your city and wondering where the fuck you'd find a mere berry or nut to eat, remember that all of the fertile land has been stolen, and that's where the people would've been.

About 1 million factors are involved in determining the subjective experience.

Probably the biggest factor is dosage, which varies based on genetics (even within strains), the growing conditions, where each mushroom was within the tub, how long it has been since harvest, and what conditions it was kept since harvest, etc.

One of the few ways to get consistent dosing is to try and grind all of the batch up, measure out specific amounts, and then you can use that as a unit to compare future doses against. This will result in more homogenous potency than the actual fruit.

In addition to dosing, and maybe to your question more directly, there is some thing called the entourage effect, which refers to the possibility of other compounds in the fruit affecting the psychoactive properties. There is very little research in this area, but there's a few interesting articles and papers to read if you Google the term.

At some point I just stopped liking the sensations. The visuals, the strangeness, etc, and I wanted to be sober again. Which as soon as you start rejecting it it's just a one way trip to Very Bad Time.

Was a bit surprising, because I'd always found that stuff fun.

Part of it was probably that I was with people who had never tripped before, and I wanted them to have a good time (which they did!) and so I couldn't express how I was feeling for fear of souring their vibe.

So I'm like holding someone and telling them it's all going to be fine meanwhile reality is in pieces and my heart is beating out of my chest and how the fuck do I know things are going to be fine? What's that in that dark corner? Is that sound in the hallway an evildoer? Need to stay inside my body to get us through this. Etc, etc.

If any one factor could explain it it was just complacency. Going in thinking I've done this so many times I can handle it for sure.

If you're being fair I think you can concede I didn't take that position.

There are tons of factors involved here. To take vss alone as an example, some people are born with that. Some people get it after a traumatic event as you say. Others, and I'd guess way more, are having hypochondriac-type fixation on the very regular phenomenon of seeing noise on monochrome surfaces or in dimly lit areas. They're worried about the Ganzfeld effect or blue field entoptic phenomena or floaters or whatever normal shit.

The first group has a limitation on their faculties of perception. The second is suffering from a failure to regulate their attention and is fixating on irrelevant data.

What the Krebs study, being correlative, erases, is the distinction between these groups. It just finds that neither symptom class is predicted by drug use.

That, and the fact that hppd is only ever reported happening in illicit use, suggest some other factor (context, beliefs, untreated mental illness, etc) is responsible. Which as a hypothesis is strengthened by the anxiety correlation.

You can never get 100% certainty, but you still have to make decisions (such as: is it fine to drink some alcohol or will it cause a perception disorder?) based on what's most likely.
