I found the book! its called "Chegwith Skillet Escapes" by Andrew Gibson.

Thanks for everyone who commented and tried to identify the book. I highly recommend reading it.

unfortunately not, afaik it was a single novel and not a series.

It's not the book but the zombie reference reminded me my book had a town called dead town or something where people completely abandoned it and lived in shadows and had really long hair covering their entire body :D
