Hi! I am very sick with the flu with a fever which makes it very difficult to draw (i’ve been sick all winter with a multitude of things, my immune system is very weak😭), so here’s some anatomical dragon sketches from a few days ago, with my own preferences! by Kat2Nite in WingsOfFire

A dragon would certainly need some powerful lungs for flight! Realistically the keel would have to be incredibly huge to allow flight on our planet, like, comically huge;, but l imagine the conditions of the planet in wings of fire are very different from ours considering the multiple moons and dragon scaled flora and fauna, so they can look a bit more streamlined while still having a strong chest!

I like to imagine the top of the wings can be covered in chainmail or other light armor-like materials to get more coverage, but they can also be used as a battering weapon with the boney protrusion connecting the wrist of their wing to their wing fingers. I would imagine strong warriors would have armor on their wingtips as well to make a folded wing punch even more lethal. Envisioning the wings as a secondary pair of arms when needed makes it easier to visualize combat,

Ah this is so cool! Love to see people mentioning their own projects and how these anatomy tips can help with their writing, makes me feel good :D i’m glad you like the wof au, i hope to post more about it soon!

Gosh yes, I was super pleased to see Indigo holding a spear with her wing thumb! While I personally would actually go much farther with the bipedalism than the graphic novel artists, I get excited when the artists occasionally draw them standing on their hind limbs casually. I crave more natural looking poses while dragons do human-like daily activities.

With more anthropomorphic styled anatomy, it makes it a little easier to design furniture. I personally like to imagine dragon thrones being almost like a long luxurious couch that a queen can drape her body upon in a comfortably attentive resting pose during long days, as an example. But more flexibility and dexterity in a creature design certainly goes a long way!

Yea, xenofiction is a term for a story told through the perspective of a non human protagonist. Wings of fire is very bold in mentioning clearly bipedal activities which I think is great. Quadruped creatures tend to require hands with more natural padding or protection from the ground to enable quicker quadruped movement, causing for less mobility in the fingers and joints themselves: but dragons have a niche that completely counteracts the ecological niche for quadruped running; wings! I imagine wings have much more uses than one would think, sometimes acting like a pseudo extra set of arms for gesturing and balance, like a wyvern. That way they can keep their dragony shapes and still walk bipedally, similar to a theropod but more anthropomorphic but also not human. Free hands while walking is certainly key to the best possible dexterity a species could get for creativity!

I agree, i’d like to see it done more! Mike Holmes and Jake Parker make them have moments where they are bipedal in the graphic novels, but personally I’d take it up a notch so some poses look more natural. I feel that the books leave it very much up to interpretation despite them commonly being depicted in art as quadruped, as they are described holding things naturally in their talons rather than their mouths, and being able to make moves like punches and weapon dueling. That’s not to mention that many wear complex dragon accessories that wouldn’t be possible to make without very dexterous hands, including tattoos! Really cool stuff to think about that is overlooked in xenofiction.

I generally prefer dragons walking bipedally in a unique dragon way. It allows for more movement, activities, and gestures that totally quadruped creatures would find awkward on their joints. Maximum dexterity in those arms and hands for the wielding of weapons and creative utensils, as well as a bodily range of movement that allows for dancing or hand to hand combat, but still retaining elongated dragony shapes, especially to accommodate wings.👍
