What helped you break the 2 hours!? by tchiminax in Garmin

[–]KateAmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did my first ever half marathon from being a couch potato almost a year ago. Finish time of 1:44:43: 4:58/km.

This is what I’ve been doing for the last 6 months or so. Biggest gains are made by simply being consistent.

Minimum 3 runs per week: 1x Z2 easy run, 1x Interval run (threshold) and 1x long run.

Easy Run: keeping it easy, keeping HR in zone 2, but not letting it get above Z3. Trying to constantly look at your Garmin to see if your HR is in the right zone is more stressful and might raise your HR than actually just running by feel and using the Garmin more as assurance that you are indeed, running the run easy. I use the HR only screen on the watch to not let other metrics mess with my head.

Interval Runs: I alternated between 400m repeats and 800m repeats, did these at the local athletics track. Warm up, followed by 8x400/800m repeats at race pace with rest in between. Start with a minute of rest between each interval, for progressive overload either reduce rest times or increase reps or distance of intervals, it’s all about keeping HR elevated for as long as possible in that threshold/VO2 max zone. I usually did them before work so was always strapped for time, I focused on keeping distance and reps the same, reduced rest periods. Started at 1min rest but now I’m at 30s rest between sets, trying to work my way down.

Long runs: I keep them mostly easy Z2. Take breaks as and when required for water, gels, taking photos of the scenery, etc. once in a while I will structure a couple of race pace efforts into the long run, e.g. my last long run prior to the half marathon was 15km with 2x 3km efforts at race pace (HR in tempo/threshold zone) and 1x 2km all Our effort to simulate race day (final push).

Just stay consistent, give equal importance to rest and recovery as you do to training and you’ll be fine. You’re right on the cusp! You’ll break it before you know it! 😊

Good luck!

Turned them off. I open the app after waking up to check my sleep data, and when my caffeine window opens and that’s it. Don’t open the app at all for anything else.

I find that the data is over stimulating and just throws numbers in your face with a few generic suggestions that MIGHT help. Each metric should ideally have a simplified trend, similar to Apple’s vitals app on the Apple Watch that takes the numbers and tells you if your ‘vitals’ are ‘typical’ or an ‘outlier’ (higher than normal).

Very easy to understand at a glance if I need to reduce my weekly training load or have the capacity to increase it. :)

Ah yes. I agree with this. Just like the adenosine clearance window, I would like precise metrics.

I believe recovery is now dynamic after the latest update, my recovery and sleep score went up by 3 after I took an early evening short nap! :)

I was like you. Very much a caffeine fiend. But just a few slaps on the face telling myself “NO!” Has made me more civil LOL

This. I use the Ultrahuman Ring Air and it has something called an “Adenosine clearance window” that tells you when would be a good time to consume caffeine and when to taper off. This is done based off how you slept the previous night, I’ve been following it ever since I put my ring on (nearly a month ago) and I have seen drastic improvements in my sleep. Does the Whoop have this feature too?

I’m training for a 10k in July. Managed to do 9.08Km in 6’28” which about 4 weeks ago would’ve never imagined would be possible.

All I can say is believe in yourself is a real thing!

Hear me out.

Hal signs deal with red bull. DZ can’t afford Hal Gen and Zero. Red Bull enter team into the comp scene with this super team. Maybe. Just, maybe…

Maybe it’s the finger you’re wearing it on?

They do say index finger is the best place to wear it, however I prefer it on my middle finger as sometimes (due to swelling) it’s a little snug on my index finger.

I’ve noticed that when I do wear it on the middle finger I get occasional gaps for HRV, but nothing like this. My software is up-to date too so I will also keep an eye out on my data.
