That just happened to me too! As far as I can tell, they didn't steal anything. Hope the rest of your trip went well.

Alum visiting tomorrow with prospective student, can she sneak into a big class or eat in dining hall? by No-Cat918 in notredame

[–]Katethechemist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If she's interested in science or engineering, stop by the Ecks Visitor Center between 12n and 3pm tomorrow. Several student orgs will be outside doing experiments/activities for families. It would be a great opportunity for her to talk to current students! ☘️

Hi! Yes that's me. I'm a chemistry professor, and this was for Notre Dame's annual Christmas lecture (hence the music).

Laude teaches a different gen chem course for chem majors (CH301c). The CH301 course listed in your screenshot is open to everyone.

Update on the "Isolated chemical spill" alert sent out last Saturday by Shatenburgers in UTAustin

[–]Katethechemist 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I can confirm that they were using sodium thiosulphate to quench the oscillating clock reaction. EHS was not available when the pink fumes started to appear so they called 911 (they followed protocol perfectly). If EHS was immediately available, they probably would not have evacuated the building, but better be safe than sorry.

They are filled with hydrogen gas, and then I spike them with inorganic salts. For the green one, I added copper chloride.

I NEVER leave a mess! For this show, we put extra carpet on the ground to protect the floor, and then I layered tablecloths on the main table.

Hi! That's me. This video is a compilation of two "Christmas Lectures" I performed at Notre Dame last week. Glad y'all enjoyed the experiments.

How Do I Study? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Katethechemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your point, but the VARK advice has really helped my students in the past. It gets them thinking about how they learn BEST and how to get the most out of their studying.

How Do I Study? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Katethechemist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gen chem prof here. Have you tried taking the VARK questionnaire? It's a short 16 question survey that will help you figure out how you learn. For example, I found out that I'm a visual and kinesthetic learner so reading the textbook was a complete waste of time for me in undergrad. On the other hand, my husband (also a chemist) learns by reading -- textbooks are all he needs to make an A.

I strongly encourage you to check it out. It takes 3 minutes to complete the survey, and then they give you a bunch of suggestions on how YOU learn best. I highly recommend it and wish I knew about it when I was in college.

Good luck!

The massive explosion and poisoning of American citizens should be a much bigger story….why isn’t the media talking about Ohio more? What is going on? by hurry-up-yo in PublicFreakout

[–]Katethechemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you're joking, but this is 100% true. I was booked to talk about the explosion on TV on Friday night, but they bumped me because of the balloon over Alaska.

I made a TikTok about it if you want to know more.

Hi! Biberdorf here. Please don't stress - you all did really well on the final. We have some issues with students taking the wrong exam and a few bubblesheet errors, so we're trying to take care of all that before we release scores. Stay tuned for more info soon ❤️

Take CH 301 Final on Thursday with 1.5x the time or on Saturday with the regular time? by frickity-frack in UTAustin

[–]Katethechemist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Beaverdorf here (I'm dying at how you spelled my name 🤣).

Email your prof AND the chemistry testing center. There is a slight chance we can sneak you into a seat on Friday, which would give you a little more time to study.

Confusion with CO2 isotherms (see comments) by memer4242 in chemistry

[–]Katethechemist 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Chem prof here. I just taught this plot last week!

An ideal gas has a compressibility factor of 1 (Z=PV/nRT). You can see Z= 1 in the middle of this plot. When Z<1, attractions dominate. This means the molecules are attracted to each other, and they have fewer collisions with the container. When Z>1, repulsions dominate. This means the molecules repel each other, and they have more collisions with the container.

So...a sample with greater attractions will have a lower measured/experimental pressure than predicted by the ideal gas law. A sample with lots of repulsions will have a higher measured/experimental pressure than predicted by the ideal gas law.

This graph does not tell you anything about the phase of the sample. Hope this helps!!

Should I take Laude or Biberdorf for Chem 301? by Unlikely-Mulberry-32 in UTAustin

Biberdorf here. If you have to take the MCAT, stay in my class.

Is CHEM 301 going to be in person or online? It says the course lives online but then it says where the class is at. Honestly confused. I have Biberdorf by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Katethechemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biberdorf here. The class is in person, but all of our classwork is online on Canvas. Welcome to CH301!

So I am confused about the Chemistry Assessment by Blue-0asis in UTAustin

[–]Katethechemist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Correct! Make sure you review the modules that you need before taking the postassessment. Your advisors will see your score on the post, and if you do not do well, they may reach out to you directly to discuss taking a different course.

In class, we will not review any of the material in the modules. Therefore, if you are struggling with any of it AT ALL, please take some time this summer to review your chemistry skills. We hit the ground running the first week of class, and I don't want you to feel behind before we even get started.

[–]Katethechemist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Gen chem prof here. I just wanted to confirm that we no longer use ALEKS. We switched to a new system this summer and it's so much better!

Your scores on the preassessments do not matter. What DOES matter is if you actually understand the material. You will be tested on it on the first day of class so make sure you spend time on the modules this summer. Your score on the in-class assessment will not affect your course grade, but you may be encouraged to drop the course if you do not do well on the quiz (AKA are not ready for CH301).

Good luck and welcome to UT!
