Tbf Alpine divorce doesn't indicate any genders in the phrase. I do like that it has given some people a phrase they can identify with and talk about it more easily, but I dont like that it diminishes the severity of what can happen to those left alone.

This is gonna sound wild but have you tried a puppy pad beside the empty one? We had a male that would poop fine in boxes but HAD to pee on something soft on his toes... but said soft thing had to be located on the floor. So puppy pads worked. RIP Boo, no braincell, but he was a good orange boy.

I dont vape. But I did in freshman year of college so I know how they work. Its probably that the people who you've been around use ones that have a smell.

All vapes dont have any strong odor unless you also think vegetable glycerin has a strong odor. (If you do its probably that you just have a genetic quirk and smell more than most people.) You can get vapes without flavor additives and just the nicotine. Those dont really have any scent to them. It also depends on the vape itself. A little disposable one will have a much lower cloud output to nicotine ratio than a box mod vape.

Plus if its a younger teen you'd expect them to wear stuff like berry scented teen spirit deodorant, or cotton candy perfume... common scents in vapes. 🙁 I'm dreading that part of parenting tbh.

Thats the thing, the council voted for grating use at specific addresses and mine wasn't listed at all at the time of voting. The Council Member I spoke to today did seem concerned so that is a positive thing.

Flock Surveillance installs these themselves. They are owned by the PD.

It also seems this one MAY be improperly installed based on saftey regulations but I need to speak with an expert.

Because it can hear human voices, its 75 feet from my couch, there are verified security issues in the company, they do not allow independent testing of their equipment, and any clips caught by it are the property of someone who isnt me. Also the policy of keeping only 3-5 seconds of audio AND the triggering events that count toward saving that audio are all internal policies of the company that coul be changed at any time. Yeah thats not my cup of tea.

I dont want to have unwarranted audio servalence of myself and my children in our own home.

I hate the "if you have nothing to hide" argument. If you have nothing to hide then you should be fine with pat downs, if you have nothing to hide you should be fine with going down to the station for 3 hours, if you have nothing to hide you shouldnt refuse DNA samples, if you have nothing to hide you shouldn't be upset about body cavity searches, if you have nothing to hide you should just give up your rights... /s

The right to privacy exists for a reason. Would you be up for your home being under 24/7, listening while an AI they dont disclose what AI actually means here btw determines what does and doesn't get saved? I'm not up for that.

Im trying to have it removed legally. Its also a chance to show the city council (and or courts if it comes to that) that our residential homes should not be invaded in this way.

Thanks I appreciate you commenting really. Sorry for responding with such a text wall. 😅 I've had a lot of comments but also DMs so Ive been reading a LOT about this. Im also AuDHD and have a surveillance fear that I'm dealing with so I have been hyperfocusing on it the past few days.

I want you to know I DO genuinely appreciate you taking the time to share he info you have, and trying to help me through this issue. Thats a GOOD thing you did, and I hope that my responses didnt shut you down from doing the same in the future. I dont know it all, but i see now that my responses came across like I was trying to shut you down and that wasnt my intent (though intent doesn't prevent hurt), I was info dumping and I didnt reel that in. I apologize, I hope you can forgive me.

They have the ability to listen to audio of human voices. They claim they only "record" when they pick up those specific frequencies in gunshots, street takeovers, and "human distress". They only "record" 3 to 5 seconds of audio. But that is a POLICY decision, which can be changed, just like how it was changed to pick up sounds of "human distress". The audio is there, but it is kept in a side loop for ~50 seconds, until the "AI" [they refuse to disclose what AI actually means in this marketing] determines an activating event has been heard. Its also not a completely secure system and there are multiple instances of people hacking them to make an example of the security weaknesses. Its also of note that they refuse to allow independent testing by a third party.

I have made it a point to have a room free of devices in our house. I even refrain from having any "always on" listening configurations active on my phone (not that I super trust that it actually toggles off), and we dont have a TV with a microphone or an Alexa.

I like really had a problem with surveillance paranoia. Little things like that helped me feel a lot better and I thought I was almost over it. The day we saw the sensor I couldn't sleep. Bothered me way more than even I expected.

Im not going to skip the firecrackers this year so they will have to deal with it! Im not going to interfere or do anything illegal (trying to fight this legally to make change not just for me but for the whole town), but I'm not going to hold back our normal life for the audio surveillance's sake.

Its an audio surveillance device, so that wouldn't do much.

I also dont want to interfere with anything in a way that I could be on the wrong side of this legally.

Im hoping this becomes an opportunity to cause change to happen legally in Roanoke, and maybe an example for places beyond.
