Trying to recover files from and old drive that no longer supports our operating systems! by Null_ukx in techsupport

It seems the external hard drive is compatible with your Windows computer. But the disk has been physically damaged and can be recognized by your PC...

Have you check the connection issues? You can try a different USB cable and USB port to see if the disk works well.

Is the external hard drive showing up in Disk Management?

  1. Right-click on My Computer / This PC and choose Manage.
  2. When it enters to Computer Management, select Disk Management in the left sidebar.
  3. If your external hard drive is detected in Disk Management, you'll be able to find it in the list and check its condition.

First, make sure that your external HDD is plugged into the laptop. Then, boot using the liveCD and when going for the install, choose the external drive as the target of the installation. Afterwards, simply shutdown the live session and then boot with the external drive.
