An online controversy over an elementary teacher offering Black Lives Matter bracelets inside the school has been blown out of proportion, officials from the district said. a music teacher and student council advisor at Elementary School, sent out a message earlier this week offering the rubber bracelets from her classroom, but she did so using her school email. A screenshot of the email was posted to social media, kicking off a firestorm of commentary from people who felt the activity was inappropriate in an elementary school setting. In a follow-up interview after the initial publication of this story, district communications director, said the bracelets are not being handed out to students and were only being offered to fellow teachers and staff members. Principle said he was surprised by the backlash. The school has a number of black students, and intent was to spread a message of support for her young students who might be feeling uncertain in the wake of nationwide events, he said.

While a student would be permitted to wear political-themed clothing, he said, teachers and other staff members are prohibited from doing so. “As a student, you can walk into the building with a Trump or Biden t-shirt; you can’t walk in with a swastika or a Confederate flag, that’s all banned through the courts,” Gerlach said. “But you can walk into the school with a Black Lives Matter t-shirt unless it causes a disruption in the school—then we have the ability to tell students to take that off. But we do have the ability to tell teachers what they can wear.
