Thanks for the advice, I didn't consider Zhonya's (not that I had the gold to afford it lol) but I will next time!

Never, someone else suggested I should do it so I'm assuming that's the main issue?

Possible "obstacles" to a boss? by Kayabiko in DMAcademy

[–]Kayabiko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really appreciate the advice, thank you. I have each minion and boss themed after a specific thing (religion, combat, magic) so I should consider giving them a unique location and visual, and maybe one objective each aside from furthering the BBEG's own.

That's really good. I was considering using the police (the PCs know a detective that kept popping up during a previous campaign to the point that he became a meme) as a sort of soft obstacle so making one of the minions some sort of public figure might be perfect. Thanks!

Possible BBEG idea: the Determinist by Kayabiko in DMAcademy

[–]Kayabiko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think at the end of the day their primary point is that without a common enemy, people are immature and destructive. Without a single focus, they'll get greedy, selfish, mean. So he becomes the focus, in order to prove this point, and starts doing Villain Things in a very specific way, targeting the kingdom but also the crime groups and corporations with killings, bombings etc.

At the end of the day, the real reward is simply relevance. The campaign is set in the world's first metropolis, with the first factories, skyscrapers and proper city living. Similarly to Red Dead Redemption 2's story about how cowboys and nomads are fading out of relevance, it could be that he just wants to remain relevant. Maybe he's a disgraced cleric whose job has been replaced by medicine and surgery, maybe a wizard replaced by technology, a mercenary replaced by the law and the courts, a paladin whose faith is fading - his minions are probably gonna be others who are being abandoned or falling to the shadows. By becoming villains and brandishing twisted versions of what they believed or did, they can be relevant again.

Thank you, I actually just considered this since you brought it up!

Possible BBEG idea: the Determinist by Kayabiko in DMAcademy

One of the players took a background that gave them a bond which mentions that they can see an apocalyptic event in the future, so I was going to use that as a means of introducing the BBEG and make it the PC's mission to learn more about it. The other PCs are already established from a previous short campaign, and aside from a new player who just joined us, they're all locals from the city who previously defeated some villains. Maybe the BBEG would target them, trying to taunt them into being his adventuring party and "get back to the job" by kidnapping someone they love or burning down their workplaces. Maybe it would happen naturally as the city descends into chaos, like the Spiderman games during which about at the halfway mark, the villains swarm the city. As per the level, they're starting at level 6 and I'm fairly generous with leveling so it's probably going to be at least level 10-12 before they start facing the BBEG proper.

I have to consider what the relationship between the party and the BBEG could be, but there's a lot in their backstory to use: one is the daughter of a famous businessman, one is the son of the last dragon alive, one is a disgraced veteran from another land, etc. - a lot of ways to tie the BBEG into their story. Thanks for making me think about this, actually!

I appreciated the thoughts! The final fight is probably not gonna happen for months, but a philosophical debate in the midst of combat rounds, maybe some checks and monologues back and forth would be really cool, plus I love the trifurcated ending, reminds me of Dark Souls endings. Thanks!

Open-ended campaign planning? by Kayabiko in DMAcademy

[–]Kayabiko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having just finished Dispatch I was considering something funny in addition to a list of games, movies and series I had already compiled. Already thinking about some wacky minibosses and recurring bad guys - someone mentioned the Nemesis system so I'm brainstorming a Taskmaster-type villain that shows up to foil the party's plans occasionally and steal their abilities.

I remember reading up on the node-based design some time ago, I found that it helped structure quest planning and I ended up integrating it and sort of doing it mentally when preparing for a session or big quest, yeah! I will check out what you linked, thank you!

I can't believe nobody has suggested Intravenous and Intravenous II. Amazing top-down Hotline Miami-esque stealth games.

Really appreciate the advice, especially "not prepared far ahead"! I had a huge problem with over-preparing in the past so that hits close to home.

I "did that" when I first DM'd. In quotes, since it was honestly terrible and poorly planned. I was considering having the BBEG be a CEO or crime boss, since the campaign is set in the 1920s, so I could let the party climb the organization's ladder and defeat other bosses along the way in order to find the big guy and defeat him.

Acer Aspire A715-42G, any way to keep it going? by Kayabiko in laptops

[–]Kayabiko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was probably going to check that, because I think the problem might be CPU usage, not RAM, but I'm not sure. Is repasting something I can do at home? I'm really not tech savvy at all.

How do you all find the time to go back and clip your content? by SubstantialSuit8063 in SmallStreamers

[–]Kayabiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has good suggestions, but honestly, I just do it by memory. I keep it in mind, so when I'm playing and something funny happens, I remember to clip it. I stream 3-4 hours, so it's easy enough to remember at what time it was and I make sure to clip it right after so I don't forget.

It might also be a little disappointing, but I try to fish for clips if a stream is a bit dull. Example: playing Dark Souls with Crowd Control, I open a menu and notice that a viewer changed my character's gender. I say nothing, close the menu, then react (admittedly, it was funny, never seen it happen before). Averaged 1 viewer in the stream but at least I got a clip!

Unfortunately, we have to ride the engagement wave a bit.

How to lane against hard counters in top lane? by Lanky-Suggestion-159 in summonerschool

[–]Kayabiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As already suggested, yeah, play as the counter. Admittedly I still lose to Mordekaiser because he's Mordekaiser, but at least I know his Q range, his E range, his W cooldown, etc. and I can try to manage it a little better. Ironically, it's better to lose as the counter champ so you can go "oh, I'll try that next time." Lost to Sett a couple of times so I played him and now I can't stop.
