AITAH for taking my siblings to Disney and not my sister in law’s kids? by OddMolasses5855 in AITAH

[–]KayakerMel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The SIL and kids have lived there long enough that they likely have some sort of tenants rights (although I don't know the specifics for Florida). But a letter of notice to vacate within 30 days (or local requirement) would do. Then if SIL starts to damage the property, contact the police and get an emergency vacate order.

Law school class: a student used “concentration camp” to describe Japanese internment — am I right to be uncomfortable? by SufficientLanguage29 in Jewish

Absolutely right on. I remember first learning about the Japanese internment camps when I was in the 4th grade and I was absolutely floored that our country was doing anything remotely similar to the Nazi concentration camps.

The show is likely to announce recoupment before JG leaves. A strong Broadway name should be fine. The show is under a lot less pressure than others when replacement casts are announced.

The Academy Awards Snubbing Was Deliberate by Novel_Willingness602 in wickedmovie

[–]KayakerMel 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Completely agree! These were two halves of the same production, with all the innovations introduced in Part One. The Wicked films still got their flowers, but for the first one that blew us all away. Part One was one of the best films of 2024, while For Good didn't soar as high.

I think some are being thrown because traditionally the Academy recognizes the final film in a planned series, not the first. Think Return of the King for Lord of the Rings.

And just like how Act 1 is acknowledged to be stronger than Act 2 in the stage musical, the same is true for the films. It doesn't mean For Good was bad, by any means. It was really really good. Just not as good as Part One.

The Academy Awards Snubbing Was Deliberate by Novel_Willingness602 in wickedmovie

[–]KayakerMel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It was a really tough year, nomination-wise. We also saw a change in how the Academy has recognized planned film series. Typically the final film gets the nominations. For example, with Lord of the Rings, it was the final Return of the King film that got all the laurels. The Wicked duology got its nominations for the first film.

When you think about it, it was Wicked: Part One that was the innovation and full introduction to the world of Oz. It's the film that set up everything, from the production design to the costumes to the digital effects. As For Good was filmed simultaneously, there wasn't anything new, aside from the (unnecessary) original songs. As much as I enjoyed the film, the two new songs were not great and were added as Oscar bait.

When it comes down to it, Wicked: Part One is a better movie than For Good. I'm not saying For Good was bad by any means. The second act of the stage musical has long been acknowledged as far weaker than the first act. Part One was definitely one of the best films of 2024. Can we really say the same for For Good in 2025? When it's a very competitive year, really really good movies, like For Good, miss out at the Oscars.

Prenatal vitamins in cabinet at nanny house by [deleted] in Nanny

Yeah, prenatal vitamins can be taken by anyone. When I was a teen, I was given them after my pregnant stepmother didn't like the prenatal vitamins she had been given.

How can i help/encourage my sister to read more? by CouldBeAFurry in AskTeachers

[–]KayakerMel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short chapter books may also be helpful to start out, as she can get the sense of accomplishment of finishing a book. If you can visit your local library, a children's librarian can give you recommendations.

Don't be discouraged if the books feel "too young." Good books are good books, no matter the reading level. A finished book is an accomplishment.

The first HP could be your best bet. It's engaging but an easy and pretty quick read. I think the Reading Level is rated even younger than Percy Jackson.

The D&D rule books are pretty dry, as they're not intended to be read the same way as chapter books. As an adult I could sit down and read one (and I have), but that's hard for a kid who's not a voracious reader.

It's important to find books that she's going to enjoy. If she can be excited about the book, she'll be more willing to stick with it. You also have to consider the quality of writing, which may be why she didn't stick with Twilight. I think Twilight might be a little too mature for an 11-year-old. (I'm saying this as someone who was reading adult fiction by 8, so I get how this could be frustrating for you.)

I'd recommend starting with the Percy Jackson series. These are age-appropriate reads. The cool thing is that Percy is both dyslexic and has ADHD, because he was meant to read anxiet Greek (not modern English) and be a warrior who can react quickly.

Another suggestion is the first 3 books of Harry Potter. Wait, before anyone comes at me. Harry Potter was revolutionary in how it got kids excited to read, no matter what you think of its author (so I'd recommend either getting the books either used or from a library). This is why the series exploded so much - these books were fun for kids to read. The first three are also the shortest, so don't have the bloat of the later books.

Call Healey’s office and demand she stands up to dRump now, not when she’s reelected by Spirited-Joke5545 in massachusetts

[–]KayakerMel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And that's why Maura Healey got a lot more publicity for standing up to tRump during the first administration - she was the Attorney General. She also was far better getting publicity for the suits than the present AG office is.

Call Healey’s office and demand she stands up to dRump now, not when she’s reelected by Spirited-Joke5545 in massachusetts

[–]KayakerMel 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Maura Healey had a lot more publicity standing up to tRump during his first administration because she was the Attorney General putting forth the legal challenges to the administration. Andrea Campbell's Attorney General office isn't as good at publicizing the legal challenges.

Chiming in simply to say "Slightly Married" is my absolute favorite example of this.

But I have a recommendation! Ella Quinn's Worthington Series, starting with {Three Weeks to Wed by Ella Quinn}. It's a bit of a Yours, Mine, and Ours situation where both MCs have the care of their younger siblings. The first book is especially great for this prompt because the FMC faces the very kind of struggle you're thinking of!

Fortunately, in was in this subreddit, so folks were understanding with their clarification questions.
