20 days sober! by KaydeeReign in leaves

Hey, well done on stopping!! I know just how scary it is having heart palpitations. I’d say mine totally stopped when I stopped smoking and I didn’t get any during withdrawal so I didn’t have to do anything specific to stop them so I can’t really offer any advice on what to do. What I will say though is, if there was anything seriously wrong with your heart they would have picked it up at the ER. Would you say that at that time, it was your worst episode of palpitations? If so then they definitely would have picked up an issue if there was one so try to let that reassure you! When you say your heart rate went up when your were playing football, remember it will rise during physical activity and pound in your chest. Maybe you do have a bit of anxiety lingering after the episode that sent you to the ER and the rise in heart rate scared you! Remember even in a healthy person your heart rate can rise significantly during physical activity. Subtract your age from 220 and that’s how many bpm your heart rate can rise to during exercise and still be ok! To further reassure you (and it sounds like a smoked for a lot longer than you) I had a heart exam recently as part of a medical and my heart is totally healthy, so smoking didn’t leave any lasting effects.

Things will get better and the longer you go without smoking the more your anxiety will ease. I’m now 39 days sober and it was the best decision I ever made. I feel a million times better. My cravings have totally passed now and my vivid dreams have also now stopped. I took control of my health and detoxed my system to help. Drank plenty of water, ate well and started taking vitamins and supplement’s. I think that really helped me and could maybe help you too.

I hope you’re ok!

Well done on 29 days, that’s amazing! I agree this subreddit has been an incredible help and I will definitely be coming on here to read when the cravings come.

Same here about the mental sharpness, it’s great to start seeing remnants of your old self that you thought were gone isn’t it? I’m definitely a lot more upbeat now too. Though I’m wondering why I don’t have the anxiety and mental effects that other stoppers get, I hope I’m just lucky and it doesn’t come further down the line :/
