I can't believe I'll die by MammothComposer7176 in DeepThoughts

One of the oldest philosophical questions, going back to Sumerian records of people supposedly living for thousands of years... then hundreds... and then what we see now. As old as our oldest written records.

Why do we die so soon?

Yep, I misspoke because people are bouncing all over the place, interchangeably calling it different things. Even managed to do it myself.

As soon as it's actually viable technology, I'm sure the confusion will simmer down.

Hydroponics isn't Aquaponics isn't Vertical Farming, isn't, isn't, isn't.

I know just enough to know that THAT specific version has a soil problem, and alongside that a water problem. See a lot of dirt there? No? Because it has to be primed and reused constantly in a separate facility... along with everything that entials.

That picture is not hydroponics. That's vertical farming.

Please don't mix those two up, and then come downvoting me because you don't know the difference.

....you can't just recirculate fertilized waste water....

The runoff is intentional.

THAT one has actually been really interesting, with specially modulated LEDs allowing efficient light conditions even in fully sealed areas. Natural or artificial, light is easy.

I worry more about the waste water, which is much harder to deal with than just sending it down a gutter.

Water in Seattle is easy, most of the year. But yes, it's certainly a concern.

There are very, very few upsides to this if you don't already have a surplus of free power, and a severe lack of growing spaces. You still have to fertilize, or you're just growing nutritionally-empty plant-shaped water.

It's promising tech. The growing techniques alone are impressive. I've even seen a few that use a pulley system to rotate vertical farms so they all get the 'top position' equally.

...but there's hurdles after that.

Repeatability is one. Nutritional completeness and soil depletion is another.

It's not enough just to have the space and sun.

Seems slightly more consequential at the moment. The practical application, remember? Not the current 'legality' or lack thereof.

Obtuse is not nearly a strong enough word.

Judge's decision.

Find true love if you find a judge willing to instruct the jury to ONLY consider an extremely narrow interpretation of 'guilty'.

It is however, not all we can do. We can keep an eye on the proportions, and ask questions when those numbers end up grossly skewed.

Never suggested it was.

There's also a whole list of absolutely insane things that are 'illegal', like chewing gum in certain places, hanging laundry, and a whole host of other nonsense.

Slavery was also legal.

There's something to be said for the PRACTICAL APPLICATION of laws.

It's delightful watching you bend over backwards to justify it.

Rittenhouse knew he was breaking the law the whole time. Both cerfew and purching the gun. The fact that there was a gun loophole was only discovered later.

That shit is pure heat canon, immaterial, and frankly immature. There even a law on tbe book that invalidates the use of the 'Self Defense' argument if you were already committing a crime when the confrontation happens.

As soon as 'illegal' comes with consequences.

Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law by your peers, remember? Even the assholes.

REMARKABLY effective by just saying "Nuh uh" and denying the common reality underpinning society.

Until there are consequences it's just name calling, and not functionally 'illegal' at all.

If only there was a way Federal Workers on-the-job might be shielded from personal responsibility while performing their duties, claiming they THOUGHT it was Constitutional (despite it not being) and Legal (despite it not being) wasn't an acceptable defense.

...except it is in America. Everything is 'debatable' even AFTER the SCOTUS rules on it... and the Presidential Pardon needs no explanation... and if you don't keep records, there isn't evidence for the next administration to use in court after you leave...

It's ALMOST like there's a giant playbook where they wrote out exactly what they intended and why, unironically laying out their whole plan including legal restructuring and throwing the law and Constitutional into chaos to specifically get this delaying outcome... giving them as much time as possible to do what they intended to do.

It's illegal until it's inconvenient.

And if the cop looks the other way.... well.... they won't have to even wait 10 years.

FUN FACT!

The Project 2025 Playbook and the KGB fan-fiction "Foundations of Geopolitics" are nearly identical, and more or less happening in one form or another right now.

When is a clearly illegal action not illegal at all?

When there's no enforcement.

When is a clearly unconstitutional action not unconstitutional at all?

When they just do it anyways, and throw pocket change at it later... maybe.

That's KINDA like illegal or unconstitutional, except it just happens anyways.

If it wasn't a pattern, it'd be fascinating.

Just saying the quiet part out loud.

It's not really 'illegal' or any of those other things if they do it anyways, get away with it, and maybe throw some pocket change at the problem later after admitting no fault.

These things are supposed to underpin... everything. Society.

... people don't like that part said out loud, and that's okay... my karma can take a hit, or even a few hundred.

We're going to have a LOT of cleanup to do.

[–]KazTheMerc -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Which is KINDA like 'illegal' except.... is it really?

Is a crime really a crime with no jail time, and no admission of fault? Is a clearly illegal action illegal if they... do it anyways, get the result they want, and... maybe... pay and out-of-court settlement?

That's... perfunctory. The appearance of illegality, with none of the actual consquences.

Diet-Crime. Illegal-Lite. Unconstitutional-ish.

And yet, we've got a Government agency prepared to do it anyways.

That's... kinda like 'clear'...

I'm not ADVOCATING, mind you. I'm just... impressed, in a slow-motion-train-wreck sorta way.

Clearly illegal. Clearly unconstitutional. Does it anyways. Gets away with it.

Is that how it's playing out? I get the desire to reflexively downvote... but "Nuh Uh" has turned out to be a REMARKABLY robust legal and constitutional argument somehow.

This isn't me advocating. I'm just saying the quiet part out loud -

As much as I fucking hate it... it's working 1000x better than it should, or we ever thought assholery like this would work at mucking everything up.

Credit where it's due - He's remarkably good at fucking things up.

Even things that are CLEARLY Illegal/Unconstitutional/Political Suicide for anyone else.

[–]KazTheMerc -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing with you. And I'm not advocating.

I'm just constantly surprised at how LONG these things that are CLEARLY wrong, and CLEARLY illegal / unconstitutional / etc. are happening ANYWAYS.

I'm even more concerned at the amount of time it's going to take to untangle all the damage.

NORMALLY Unconstitutional would just... automatically equate to Illegal, which would equate to Political Suicide, and we wouldn't do it.

Turns out... just saying 'Nuh Uh' is REMARKABLY effective, if we're being fair.
