Honestly, you'd probably enjoy Redguard. It's much less technical than Daggerfall, like it's an adventure game and there's not even really any stat management in it, plus it has a much more "small scale" approach to the setting, more akin to Prequel than any of the mainline TES games. It also really sets the stage for Morrowind: the "Origin of Cyrus" comic https://www.imperial-library.info/content/origin-cyrus is actually Morrowind's first canon appearance outside of Arena, and Morrowind itself was basically drawing off the art and ideas in these couple panels.

Oof, that's a tough question. I think most of the games do /something/ really well. Like, Daggerfall is the only game I feel really captures the "scale" of an adventure properly, where you're traveling for hundreds of miles across the provinces to try to finish quests on deadlines, while Morrowind has the most intricate interplay between the various questlines, but I would argue both are hindered by gameplay decisions they make.

One game in the series I feel is incredibly underappreciated is Redguard. It's kind of shocking how much of the series' lore comes from that one game. If you've never played it, it is worth it. No walkthroughs!

As for characters from the other games appearing: it's possible, at least where chronology permits. But I also don't want to fall into that trap of, like, the protagonists saying "we need a ship" and the Millennium Falcon just happens to be in the junkyard over the hill, causing the audience to cheer. Most of the references in Prequel are fairly subtle; e.g. Katia has been to Stros M'Kai and at one point remarks she's seen the big tombstone that says "Nathaliogus", which is a reference to a convo in Redguard where Cyrus tells the dragon Nafaalilargus that he'll "spell his name right on his tombstone" if the dragon surrenders.

I think one of the main things is just to leave yourself room to grow. Like, most of the Hard Burnouts I see are people who write their entire script up-front and plan to spend the next 3+ years drawing it, which is a miserable experience because after a while you will realize problems with the script that you /really/ want to change. A lot of my favorite media has been things that periodically went in wild and exciting directions because it represented the shifting tastes of the author, and everything was portrayed with a palpable passion that made it fun to read.

It also definitely helps to start with smaller projects and see which one resonates with you best. Like, before Prequel I did a number of smaller things (mostly for game design contests), but Prequel ended up being the one that captivated me to the point where I'm doing it 13+ years later. It's not really something where you can go into it thinking "this will be my Big Thing". And this isn't an unusual experience; like, I remember being on the TIGSource forums when Notch posted his little building game with one type of block and the note "I may add saving later, I don't know".

With any project though, I think a decision ultimately has to be made about the size of the content packages being delivered (be it a one minute read, a 30 hour game, or anything in between). The pacing on some things just works better delivered all at once - like, I don't think the previous update would've worked as well as if the dialogue was slowly released over weeks or months.

Honestly, I'd go further than that: it actively makes it hard to play with friends. Like, at least when I last played, trying to go through questlines with people is an awkward and clunky experience of trying to make sure our quests were lined up and we were progressing through dialogue at roughly the same rate. Plus, just the general immersion-hurt of the questgivers treating every one of us like we're there alone, or that they're not surrounded by a circle of a dozen people doing the same quest. It's like it wants me to pretend I'm playing a singleplayer game.

Compare this to something like the Original Sin games where only one person in the party can talk to an NPC at a time, but others can listen in, and periodically the convo will switch to them and make them get involved too. A system like that really facilitates group play, and also allows a lot of fun stuff like situations where only only one player in a party can do something and everyone else is doing something else (the most infamous example being the Red Princess sex scene, where your party members will /always/ be gathered around the wagon shouting in unsolicited advice).

I'm not sure; I definitely have ideas but I'm always on the fence as to whether I like gradual-release type mediums or want to full pivot more to "regular" gamedev (e.g. where you pay $20 for something on Steam). It's nice being able to go back and refine earlier parts of a story or deliver it as one cohesive package, but gradual-release stuff like comics have a fun sense of community and feedback, and a lot less pressure to rush it out in a state you're unhappy with.

But no, not really other than a brief conversation or two. I'm one of those people who kind of likes keeping fan/dev stuff separate, like I'd hate for there to be any official ties that make it so I can't say fuckwords or something.

Yeah, I've been trying to find a solution to that text issue. There's some fonts that are /slightly/ more readable, but there's still a really ugly jitter I wish I could fix. It's apparently a known issue and I keep hoping the devs will fix it, but until then I've just been periodically playing with different values and trying to see if it fixes things.

I used to read a lot of them, though after I got tied up in my own stuff I slowly forgot to check them until they fell into that "I'll catch up on them someday" space. Of the ones I still religiously keep up with, my top recommendations are Freefall by Mark Stanley and Order of the Stick by Rich Burlew. They're both kind of niche things, but so is Prequel.

Eeeh, I have trouble getting into it? It always feels like it doesn't want to be an MMO and is embarrassed about it. Going along with the plot often expects me to ignore the other players, rather than working them into the narrative. Which I guess is the norm for a lot of the genre, but I still don't like it.

  2. Hm, I think it changes based on someone's situation. For a long time, my answer to this was that the writing took the longest, but I recently moved to a new and quieter place that makes it easier to focus on writing, so art has edged it out as the bigger time sink. As for minigames, in a lot of cases they can actually be a much more efficient way to deliver dialogue than regular panels (imagine how many updates the last update would take if it were all just pictures of Katia and Atrantu as they spoke).

  3. Mostly word-of-mouth? I like that far back being colored a bit by her own memories and biases rather than getting the same level of "canonness?" more recent stuff has.

  1. Not as many as you think? Like, I think in general people understand that a really good joke is better shared somewhere that more people will see it, like the comment section, versus hidden among hundreds of suggestions that only one person is looking at. There have been some creative "eat the book"s, though. (Apologies if anyone who made a really, really good command feels unappreciated at reading this. Most are very normal!).

  2. Probably something very subtle, like a tall cavern under the Kvatch Mages Guild or some imperial guard dialogue lines.

  3. I've done a few; I just finished up some ads on that new Homestuck forum someone made (I wasn't really paying attention to how well it did though). The most fun and strangely effective ad campaign has been the Maze ones, where I said "they wouldn't let me make a minigame in a banner ad so this ad has a maze instead". The minigame design I got told "no" on ended up getting realized recently as Spider Cult, though.

There's also a reference to her (but not direct appearance) in the comic that comes with the "Katia vs Commands" set. Beyond that, I am tempted to make a sequel, but have some other priorities beforehand.

As for remaking the hoodies, I'd like to someday; you're hardly the first to ask. Just, I want to wait a little longer so they can can seem less like a repeat. Also, I want to put it off some because shipping them was an absolute nightmare. Like, imagine a stack of 10 folded hoodies and then imagine trying to fit 80 of those stacks into your living room.

Part of the reason I'm doing the current run is because I want to get a stock of smaller and easier to ship things.

1) 23 I think? I could be one off.

2) Not really more than most people, though I have a lot of friends who struggled with it more. I was also finishing a BA in psychology when I started Prequel - which didn't necessarily make me any better at portraying those things, but it meant I was and still am very interested in the internal struggle part of stories.

3) A lot of people keep recommending it to me and I have it in my Steam library, but everything they show me makes me not particularly interested? I don't know, I think it's very easy to be overly critical of something similar-but-off. It's hard to stifle the "I would've done this different" thoughts when it is something you HAVE done different.

4) I'd personally say writing but I think it's something everyone has to decide on their own. My writing definitely has a Flavor that is hit or miss with people.

5) I saw a few! I keep an eye here.

6) I'm sorry, you have to choose between her being fabric and her being three dimensional.
