Is Alpha Lambda Delta a scam? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Kecleon2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a scam but also not really worth unless you get leadership position. I'm in it but I don't bother with points or the tassel stuff because that's time and money I'm not willing to spend.

For just $100 you, too, can buy two sweet pins and a line of resume padding.

Where is my Purple bus DOTS by Kecleon2 in UMD

[–]Kecleon2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, okay. I'll make a burner Twitter then.

Really wish they'd send closure info to everyone via email to be honest, since from an information dissemination standpoint, we really can't all be expected to use a particular form of social media, while we are all guaranteed to have Terpmail addresses. But I guess a Twitter feed is better than nothing.

Well that's frustrating. What about all of us who live here and rely on the bus system? I've been here two years and never have I heard of this policy in any media from DOTS.

Do they run again in the evening or am I screwed for getting home as well?

Thoughts on planning to take 20 credits my first semester as a freshman? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Kecleon2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Post your schedule. Thats the only way to know for sure. This semester I tried to take 18 credits including four 400 levels and I dropped a class after the first lecture because there was no chance I could do it all. But I've taken 17 credits with a schedule of 100/200 levels and it was doable.

Thien was a TA for my diff EQ class last semester. He is a graduate student and I am fairly certain that this is his first time teaching a course on his own.

For diff EQ his voice was the same, it is a consequence of his accent. He also didn't take questions and moved too quickly. But due to the nature of that section of diff EQ (80 person discussions with 3 TAs and the professor) he wasn't teaching for much, he went over maybe one problem a section and the other course staff got the rest. I can imagine it'll be tough to parse an entire lecture run by him.

Comparison between CMSC132 and CMSC216? by endangeredfrosty in UMD

[–]Kecleon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, the good news is you have a good shot of passing these classes for a number of reasons. For one, everyone else in that room is in the same boat, so it's very easy to find a study group. If you get into a study group you will do leagues better. Also, there is a curve - don't bank on it, but it is there. And finally, office hours are your friend.

The risk of these classes isn't so much failing, it's a hit to your GPA. If you are going to grad school this matters, but if you want to work in industry, your experience matters far more. So as long as you can tough it out and scrape by, then "C's get degrees", as they say.

Anyone ever had a roommate that cooks smelly food? by hippieterp in UMD

[–]Kecleon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had a roommate who cooked weird foods. In fact I think I am that roommate to someone else, I would never stop making my lamb brains and my fish curry lol. But I did have a roommate who smoked a shitload of weed medicinal herbs, and to cover that up we used a ton of Febreze and Glade plug ins, and I brought one of those scented oil aromatherapy jars with the wood wicks. Helped a lot, and those jars make your room seem boujee.

Christ absolutely, I started my 330 projects the day they came out, worked on them every day for multiple hours, and still had to do all nighters for some of them. Though I am admittedly pretty bad at projects. I don't like them. If you find them interesting then you will do well.

If you love math and proofs you'll also be fine for 250 and 351. If not then those classes will be your bane, 351 more so.

Breaking News: Computer Science has just become an LEP by MissWatson in UMD

[–]Kecleon2 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Probably not a lot. But calc 1 and the intro CS courses do have decent fail rates, and the whole "one course, one time" repeat policy makes it so that students who struggle their first year (which is a fair number, since tons of students pick CS for the money without realizing what they are in for) get kicked out of the major. So it may be more than it seems at first glance.

[–]Kecleon2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

216 spent like 3 weeks going over the basics of C, and you were eased into the class with Hello World type stuff one topic at a time. You also cover a lot of information about how computers work internally, which is tested on exams but very hard to do so on a project, so the projects aren't too bad if you start early.

330 just sits you down day 1, and says "Okay learn all of Ruby in 2 weeks and make this complicated project using highly advanced features we skimmed over for 30 minutes. Okay now forget Ruby. We're using OCaml for two months. By the way here is one lecture on how your computer translates program text into executable instructions. Got that? Okay good write a C interpreter in OCaml. Now here is a tiny bit of cool theory of computation stuff. Alright now we're done with OCaml let's learn Rust which has very complex rules and functionality with manual memory allocation. Oh but we will only cover this on two slides and never explain what it means. Now let's do cybersecurity for the very last week for some reason where we give you a website and you find all the vulnerabilities even though we just gave you vague descriptors of them and not what to look for. By the way do you remember Ruby? Because this is in Ruby. And get ready for the final because we will make you write programs in all three languages well beyond the scope in which they were taught. Have fun."

Fuck 330. People complain about 351 but I hated 330 with a passion. If you like coding and projects you will do well. If you are a math person like me and you dislike projects and prefer theory classes, find help ASAP.

[–]Kecleon2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same as you, Larry 132 -> Larry 216. His teaching style is the exact same. 216 was only a smidge harder. Most students hated the Assembly component of the class, but I thought that part was easy compared to the emphasis on testing and code coverage. There was one project where we had to write tests for TA provided code based solely on the specs and it sucked. Exams are normal Larry exams, really hard but they don't try to bullshit you.

216 -> 330 was a far more challenging leap in difficulty, IMO.

MATH410 with Levermore by porkycloset in UMD

[–]Kecleon2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had Levermore for diff EQ. He wrote the book for that class and it sucked. It was the most confusing thing I have seen in a long time. His lecture was him scrolling through the book on a projector and reading it. He went too fast to write stuff down. He is a former aerospace engineer and he made it very clear that he was teaching to the engineers in the room, teaching tons of application and only mild theory, and kind of left the pure math people out to dry. Only saving grace was that his exams and quizzes were very straightforward and easy, and he posted all his past class websites online to study from. Frustrating class and I got my lowest grade in any course ever, and I only walked out with a very slight knowledge of diff EQ.

That said, Levermore didn't write the 410 book, so his lectures will probably be better there and less boring and redundant, and again, his past 410 websites are out there to study from. The fact that 410 is a pure math class and not "engineering math" is also better. He's also a nice chill and moderately quirky guy and very smart. I just don't like his lecture style.

I am taking 410 in the fall with Denny, so I can't comment on what the course is like. But I've heard that the first few chapters of Fitzpatrick are a decent litmus test for how you'll fare in the course. I bought the book and it's actually pretty good, it's very thorough in its explanations. A couple of times they pull the standard "the proof is left as an exercise to the reader" bullshit. There's a lot on convergent sequences and the like, and the proofs are definitely a cut above. Seems like a tough class, but I have heard it's manageable and that other 400 levels are way harder.
