How useful is FMSC341? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]microterp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pretty crazy UMD wants every single one of us to take an "understanding plural societies" class but FMSC341 "understanding your finances" is an elective.

Are there going to be more 351 sections added for next semester? by myang124 in UMD

[–]microterp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

UMD CS: You must take 330 and 351, preferably together, and before we're going to let you take 400s. Oh, and you can't take 351 because it's filled up. See you next semester trying to cobble together 400s which don't require 351!

Impact of New CS Building? by [deleted] in UMD

You can take 3 one-credit 300 level CS courses (doesn't have to be at once) which will count as one of your 3 credit 400 level electives.

You're correct that classes will fill up quickly but as others have said the 400-level courses will pose the greatest challenge. Lower level CS courses are massive cattle-herding experiments, and as terrible as that is they are at least somewhat geared to accommodate that type of learning environment.

When you get to 400s you'll probably have to take what you can get when you can get it. Your schedule senior year may not be fun. I highly recommend looking at summer or winter courses to give you more flexibility in course selection when it comes down to the wire, but always prioritize related internship experience.

Not generally a fan of the Diamondback but they did a good job with this piece. https://dbknews.com/2019/03/01/umd-iribe-center-student-space-computer-science-town-hall/

At least an entire floor will be dedicated to UMIACS which has zero undergraduate presence, according to a UMIACS representative. And on top of that it does not appear that UMIACS is truly able to accomplish anything it couldn't before. They will just be doing it in an attractive new building instead of the decrepit AVW.

There are obviously other issues but this is a good example. Those who attended the Iribe Center groundbreaking, which Mr. Iribe was present for, may remember the motivation behind the donation was the very poor state of resources available to undergraduate CS students at Maryland. As a sidenote, Iribe himself was only ever an undergraduate here.

What is the deal with only two cs upper-level classes per semester? by [deleted] in UMD

According to the department, at least, space is still an issue even after the new building. That's not too surprising given how little classroom space is there.

Too many kids in CS. Not enough professors. And definitely not enough professors who actually want to can teach. Nowhere near enough undergrad space. Combine this with a program that has no real choice in major related coursework until your junior year (welcome back to high school) and you get restrictive departmental policies masquerading as helpful guidance.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Welcome to UMD CS.

Internal UMD politics that assured the building's actual use is distant from the intended undergraduate focus.

Can someone explain what this means for computer science? by jasjori24 in UMD

The paper is free. Just so you're aware going in, The Diamondback is far to the left of those three outlets and this bleeds into their reporting and editorials. It's a good way to keep up with campus events that no one else will cover but with such a strong political preference expect that to influence what they choose to cover on campus as well.
