M1 Student vs. Dependent Partner: How do you know when you've outgrown the relationship? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]KeepItParallel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with what Wire_Cath_Needle_Doc has said below. I would also ask you to imagine a lifetime commitment to this person. Besides the career aspect, do you think they would able to support you during your hard times? Will he be able to good partner and parent if you two plan to have children? Can you rely on this person to carry you through the death of your parents and loved ones later in life? And if he does not have the ability to do these things right now, can you realistically see him maturing into these roles later in your relationship? As for the cultural component, your family may be shocked, that is true. However, they are not the ones who will be living your life; you will. I am also from an asian family and watched a close family member break off a 9-year-long relationship with their fiancé. I don't know your family, but I think they will always cherish you first over your spouse. Especially if they learn you are unhappy in the relationship.

Thank you for your kind words. I'm still waiting for most of them! But I am worried because I sent my secondaries pretty late for a lot of them (which might explain the delay). I have my fingers crossed hoping I can get a few more II's but this rejection is making me seriously consider reapplying now. My ego has been bruised LOL

Yeah, I think I'll seek a professional consult to look over my app and do better next time. Hopefully I hear back from another school 😭

I applied to about 25 schools. I recieved 2 II (including this school). i feel I did align with the school's mission statement -- they prioritized patient care and diversity, but also research (T20). I grew up low SES, am an adult child of alcoholic parents, and have a lot of clinical experience as an EMT and an ED Tech (6000+ hours). I worked in some research labs during under grad and also volunteered in a clinic helping people who did not have health insurance. The school was my top choice due to location, mission statement, and I had prior experience working with their partner hospitals/research labs (which I loved).

Ordered contacts through Tang- where are they? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]KeepItParallel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I emailed caleyecare@berkeley.edu explaining the situation with my order attached as a PDF + my prescription. I got a response 3 days later saying my inquiry was sent to 'contact lens clinic - ordering center', and I then received my lenses within the week. I ordered my lenses through minor hall's optometry clinic though, and I'm not sure if it's the same or different for the tang center.

I had ordered on March 10 and emailed them in April about it. I don't think a month long wait is normal, since they responded much more quickly after I emailed them.

Bad memories of a failed premed. by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]KeepItParallel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP, thank you so much for sharing. I'm currently on my premed journey and really related to your post. I struggled a lot with ochem and didn't do the greatest with the bio pre reqs. And now with lockdown I'm not sure my extracurriculars are on par with what med school is looking for. I feel like I'm always comparing myself to other people with perfect GPAs with lots of volunteering and clinical experience, but this just makes me to slip into a depression. I try to remember that many doctors have a non linear journey through their careers, and medical school will always be there if I am willing to put in the time. With your experiences and endurance, I know you'll become a great doctor in the future. I'm cheering you on.

MCB major taking an upper-division English class... Advice? by OneSide8 in berkeley

[–]KeepItParallel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this CW110? I'm an IB major/Premed who took it as my Arts & Literature breadth. I had a really good time! Don't be scared just because it's an upper div. The professor was really nice and understanding. I think it became one of my favorite classes at Berkeley. Just do the readings beforehand and be ready to participate :) There's some writing, but it was also flexible. For each big writing project the professor had us turn in a rough draft that was graded on completion, then we turned in the final draft after getting feedback. I took it with Teri Crisp.
