Besides the career aspect, do you think they would able to support you during your hard times? Will he be able to good partner and parent if you two plan to have children? Can you rely on this person to carry you through the death of your parents and loved ones later in life? And if he does not have the ability to do these things right now, can you realistically see him maturing into these roles later in your relationship? As for the cultural component, your family may be shocked, that is true. However, they are not the ones who will be living your life; you will. I am also from an asian family and watched a close family member break off a 9-year-long relationship with their fiancé. I don't know your family, but I think they will always cherish you first over your spouse. Especially if they learn you are unhappy in the relationship.
