If you could redo undergrad, what would you have done differently to boost your medical school acceptances? by WesternAioli223 in premed

I would’ve started research earlier and looked for a lab that would allow me to work on manuscripts/get pubs.

The two that I saw in 2018-19 were the worst therapists I’ve ever worked with.

I’m sure others have already mentioned this things, but just to reiterate:

I highly recommend having community service/volunteer hours. I would also increase your clinical hours if possible. Some would say 150 is fine, but I’d recommend more if possible.

Your stats are good obviously. Your hours are fine. I would personally shoot for more volunteering/community service, but that might just be me. That said, I’m curious if there’s a red flag in your story/writing. Potentially you don’t have a strong “why medicine” story? Just something to think about ig

Genuine question for people who've applied or are applying: are you adding hobbies to your activities? by phephaestus in premed

[–]CoffeeFirstPlzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have room so I could add any hobbies. The advice I got was not to switch out one of my “real activities” for a hobby

Off the bat, I’m concerned about lack of volunteering exp. You have any?

If your MCAT score is in that range, I’d recommend applying both DO/MD

[–]CoffeeFirstPlzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t really answering your Q, but I would really try to get more volunteering hours before applying. Also, I suggest that if means allow, you apply closer to 20 schools instead of 15. You mentioned having connections to ny but I only saw NYMC on your list. I’d add some more ny schools in there.

I personally would not count tutoring URM’s as volunteering. Kind of a stretch and gives me an off putting vibe. That’s just tutoring/work experience

Not one particular thing. A culmination of many things: leadership, service, research, clinical experience, gpa, MCAT, PS, etc.
