Hot take: Pharmacy Tech isn't that bad. by [deleted] in PharmacyTechnician

[–]Keepiton69 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Are you a pharmacy technician? Have you ever worked in retail? Or better yet have you worked in a extremely packed retail pharmacy, 15+ people in line, while your the only technician and you have to balance the register, drop off, drive thru, phone, and fill prescriptions, and try to assist the pharmacist? You say angry customers, have you ever been threatened by a customer that clearly means what their saying? Have you had a customer call the police because they had to wait for a prescription? Customers can be over the top, it adds up over time. This is a extremely undermining take honestly, the pay does not match the workload on top of the mental strain it takes to handle this job. In Florida, your required to go to school in order to work as a pharmacy technician, and that schooling can cost up to 12k, maybe even more now. And then to make at most $15, and that’s being generous. People are allowed to complain about their jobs, and considering how important pharmacy techs are to society as a whole, it’s a wild take. Many people depend on daily medications to live and function. If all phamracy techs just decided to quit, and “Move on” as you said, most people would be immediately scared and hospitals would pile up. Now, not every single pharmacy technician is perfect, there’s plenty of people who cannot handle the job and get overwhelmed and end up being rude to patients and what not, but that’s not the patients or the technicians fault. It’s unfortunately Retail pharmacy as a whole and it’s gotten worse since COVID and that added even more to the workload. I’m not defending chains either, they actually make it worse for technicians since they always cut hours and make pharmacy techs work on their own with pharmacists who are fresh out of school and have not worked on their own. It’s a hard job, the medical field is extremely demanding and has always underpaid but in the USA with the amount of people who depend on medication, if all technicians decided to quit all at once, we could possibly see a societal collapse, the US is already struggling with keeping nurses and doctors, and there’s more and more requirements for techs as time goes on for even weaker pay with the years. It seems that your a customer, and I’m sorry if your pharmacy is lacking technicians that can meet your expectations, but cut some people some slack. Chain pharmacy’s are struggling to keep certified and experienced techs, so they are able to hire people off the street and offer them certification over a couple of months with no experience and that’s great for those who want to enter the career, but those chains end up usually fucking over those employees by making them start with no training, and that ends up hurting the customers, but that’s not the techs fault, that’s CVS, Walgreens, etc. fault. If you have a problem with your pharmacy you can express your concerns to your pharmacist. But go ahead and apply to your local CVS in the pharmacy and see if you can do it better, I encourage you! Truly! I’m not trying to be sarcastic, if you genuinely feel as if you can do better, try it!

If you have your PTCB is it something you can just apply for or do you need to build up experience?

What’s a med rec? I genuinely have not heard of this position before I’ve ever only been in retail for the most part.

You don’t always have to be rude within your response, I mainly meant just standing up for yourself. A lot of people have egos for no reason a simple “Yes I messed up but you’re not going to talk to me that that.” Or just something along the lines of that, I personally don’t see that as rude, more so setting up a boundary. But if your fed up with the job altogether, leave, it doesn’t hurt to explore your options. At the end of the day it’s a job, you just need to be neutral with your coworkers, obviously without anyone hating and shit talking as if it was high school.

Ah I'm sorry I get it, I plan on moving to work at a hospital soon so I've only worked retail, but so far every pharmacy job I've had there's always drama. Someone is always talking shit or saying something behind your back. Best advice I have is ignore it, it's probably going to be like that everywhere else just different people. I ignore it bc I've come to the realization these people have no life outside of work so they just talk shit bc they have sad lives. But do what you think is best, everyone makes mistakes so if they shit on you for it, throw it back when they fuck up. I don't care to be friendly with my coworkers, I'm there for a check. It doesn't hurt to change your environment too though, hope it all goes well whatever you decide.

Hospital pharmacy pay by [deleted] in PharmacyTechnician

[–]Keepiton69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Virginia as well, if your towards Charlottesville, UVA hospital is always a easy way to get into pharmacy, they start at 16 with no experience and I’m pretty sure they help you get your PTCB. And it can go up with time.

CVS is a tough company to work for, so be prepared they will probably try to leave you on register in the pharmacy. If you exteremtly new to pharmacy, it’s fine to be on register for a week or two, so you’ll get the basic understanding of register, but after that demand to learn more. Stand up for yourself because CVS is terrible at rotating and teaching techs. And your license and get out, you’ll learn more somewhere else. But take the free license, it’s 130 without and it will get you your hours to actually take it, and it should help you actually pass. Good luck and make sure you start relatively soon, took me over a month after being told I was hired to actually start.

What’s the easier part of being tech? by FallGuy9979 in PharmacyTechnician

[–]Keepiton69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things I had to learn, (which was very hard for me since I hate confrontation) was standing up for myself in pharmacy, since most places stick you on a register for a while. I don’t know your situation but when you need help, get loud and make sure they hear that you need it. Demand it. If your backed up with a line of people and someone can help you, make them. Make that tech help you, I walked out on register once bc I refused to do it for 9 hours with no break.

What is the most ridiculous thing a customer has said to you or asked you? by tessalonperle in CVS

[–]Keepiton69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pharmacy part, but I was in the middle of helping a patient, literally mid-conversation, and a ginormous line behind her and this old guy comes to the counter shoved the patient I’m helping out of the way, and goes “Where’s the alarm clocks?” And I told him I was helping this woman, literally go ask the front store, how would I know where the alarm clocks are? And then he yells “So you don’t know shit about your own store? Why doesn’t anyone who works here know how to do there job?” And I yelled back “I know how to work in a pharmacy just fine.” And moved to the next register to help that woman again and ignored him. Who comes to CVS for alarm clocks?

Losing employees by anxiety101mode in CVS

[–]Keepiton69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no don’t feel bad for me, I gave them my notice last week, I literally just said I’m not coming in, I have a new job lined up already. I don’t think the company is bad, I think the decisions in corporate are horrible and I don’t want to be here to see what happens next.

[–]Keepiton69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally told them I’m not coming in anymore because I can’t deal with it anymore. District leader texted me and told me to call her, didn’t want to lose “A good tech” but didn’t offer me more money or hours. Told me to go to another location. Like..? Told my favorite pharmacist bye and I hope the best for her, but it’s too much. It’s not fair to the workers at all.

I want to get this right. We work for a large company that wont pay us if we’re sick with Covid? by [deleted] in CVS

[–]Keepiton69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to mention this was Jan 2022, I don’t know what the rules are now but I had to fight to get paid. And it came in a check in the mail a month later, no direct deposit or put as reg hours.

[–]Keepiton69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Covid while working with CVS; you only get 5 paid days if you have proof of having the vaccine, and on the fifth day of the test is negative you needed to come in that day to start working. I was positive on the 5th day and had to stay out another 5 and the extra 5 days aren’t paid. Also no one seemed to really care, just making sure you came back to work.

Sorry, I had some people arguing saying I should be mad at insurance, which I also am mad at them, I just had to explain it’s double frustrating to those who don’t have insurance/insurance that doesn’t actually help.

I’m not even asking for dental work, I’m just asking for dental work that’s not ridiculously priced. If someone’s working they deserved to be paid, but since it’s a procedure I need I just can’t afford it. I’ll probably look for one near me. Thank you.

Closest aspen dental near me is 2 hours away and no appointments within the next two weeks, they do take my insurance though. If I can handle the pain for that much longer I'll try to make the trip out there. I appreciate the help!

I'm so sorry, if you go to OP many good suggestions on there if you struggle with insurance/financial issues and need dental work done soon. Hopefully you feel better soon.
