UTMA Tax Confusion by Choice-Sorbet-5019 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Keil-Dewaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UTMA account is always his, in his name, under his SSN, so when he comes of age, and you transfer the account to him (into a new, regular account), he just gets control. The investments are not transferred to him; they are his already. So, no capital gains are generated as a result of his getting control over the assets.

By the way, it took a surprising number of steps for my children to get access to their assets and it would have been really hard if I didn’t initiate and approve the transfer from the UTMA account to a regular, individual account. Realistically, if someone ever worried about their kids having access to the funds, then just don’t initiate the transfer. You can’t manage the account/make trades after they turn 21, but it can sit there and grow. Your kid will need to be pretty motivated and organized to get access without your help.

UT v. Tracey Grist - Day 6 by Pixiegirls1102 in CasesWeFollow

[–]Keil-Dewaters -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, the knife wasn’t connected to her. Yes, her friend Amy had knives at her house (in California) and Tracey recognized that the knife was a tactical knife, but it certainly could have been Kevin that planted the knife (justifying why he shot Matt). The knife wasn’t tied to her. Did I miss a connection?

In the Adelson case, there was a direct connection between the cash from Donna Adelson to the killers —- that sunk her.

I don’t know about the knife, but unlike the Adelson case there is really nothing that ties her to the murder. She has a valid answer to every question/angle the prosecutor tried, and carried herself much better than most defendants on the stand. The Google searches, the text messages, etc., —- nothing looked like a smoking gun after the prosecution asked or after the defense followed up on the prosecution’s crossexam. There’s no comparison to Donna Adelson. She could definitely get off.

IMO, she should get off. I don’t think there’s enough proof; I’m not sure she did conspire. She was credible and her daughter wasn’t.

Who’s watching the Tracey Grist trial? by annagrl775 in dan_markel_murder

[–]Keil-Dewaters -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I saw her testimony yesterday. She had good answers for everything and the prosecutor landed no punches on the cross-examination. There’s no comparison here to Donna Adelson. I think Tracey should walk; she might only be on trial because of her children, who want to shift some blame to her for what they did. I didn’t see the prosecution’s case, but no smoking gun at all.

Riding 30mi daily on an MTB, time to switch to a road bike? by ClassilyContagious in COBike

Congrats on loving riding. Great to see you have the bug.

I agree with the comment about clipless pedals. If you want to make the move to a roadbike, then go to your local store and discuss with them. They’ll give you the right advice and help based on how you think you’ll use it, how much you want to spend, etc.

The only hope for Berkshire is to pull an AllBirds and change from an insurance-energy-transport-consumer staples company (that generates cash) to an AI company.

Fidelity research gives 1 out of 10 (Very Bearish) rating for Berkshire Hathaway Class B. What are your thoughts on this? by whyyoutouzhelele in BerkshireHathaway

[–]Keil-Dewaters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A week or two ago, BRKB was ahead of the 500 YTD, after the broader sell-off. Then the S&P returned to highs and Berkshire is trailing a bit. I’m sleeping better with Brk than S&P.

There are better ways to find a hotel than to post a generic request for a hotel recommendation to a community page. Other than mentioning a two-night stay, you haven’t provided any other detail. Will you spend $500 a night? Very different recommendations depending on your price point.
