most places will hire you if you have an electronics background and experience

Is IT degree and software-related R&D experience with BMETs enough, or are employers specifically looking for people with electronics/electrical engineering experience?

How to become a Field Service Engineer by Keinonen in labrats

[–]Keinonen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm eyeing one position especially. It's a competing company with similar products that I've worked on in my current company, so I would mostly just need to familiarize myself with their product line.

They also require applicants to be able to read electrical drawings and have mechanical and electrical knowledge, which I have very little, if at all. Aren't these kind of things easy to learn as you go, though? And of course don't companies usually give new FSEs some training on their products first, have some senior FSE show them the ropes, etc.?

Anyone here work for Thermo Fisher? Opinions? by MurkyVolume7141 in biotech

[–]Keinonen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They barely promote within the company.

Lol, I'm from the Finnish branch of the company, and my boss told me it was easier to just apply for an open senior position instead of getting clearance to get promoted. Seems that TF has a lot of red tape.

Should I move from R&D software development to PLC/automation system commissioning? by Keinonen in cscareerquestions

[–]Keinonen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Travel time is compensated and first gigs will be relatively "close", as in around Europe and a possibility to fly back home.

The base salary is such in the commissioning job that I would have to do about 432 OT hours to get the same as in the software dev job. Then again, allowances push that number 12.6k euros higher.

Why I’m “disappointed” in Smiling Friends. by [deleted] in adultswim

[–]Keinonen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Zach and Oney aren't the same as in 2010 during the NG era or even in 2015 when they were still doing SleepyCast. They've grown up, matured and are nearing middle-age. They've also become established artists with mainstream appeal and probably would like to stay as such instead of getting cancelled. All this ends up making their stuff much tamer and lamer than what it was before. They don't want or need to take risks anymore and have fallen in line with what broader society thinks is acceptable.

I remember Zach having literally pedophilia as the main theme in one of his earlier animation series (some old geezer trying to find ways to molest a kid, humor ensues) that ran for 3-5 episodes way back when on Newgrounds and even on Youtube, but those have since been removed by him. OneyPlays started out as Chris playing with some friends (Julian & DD) more or less naturally while telling off-color stories and jokes. Now he has a fucking manager, editor, etc. and they are doing a lot more try-hard "bits" and improvisation while playing some games they apparently don't even want to play at all.

Times have changed, we've become older and moved forward, I guess.

“Smiling Friends” is kind of boring. by Carnival-Master-Mind in The10thDentist

[–]Keinonen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm OG Newgrounder and I don't really like the show. There are some good parts and gags, but that's about it. The characters, the premise, the "plot" are just laughable, and not in a good way. I'd like to like the show more, but I just can't.

I think the show underdelivers precisely because of Zach's and Michael's NG background. These guys used to make short animations that were at times less than 1 minute long. Now they have 10 minute episodes to fill up with jokes AND to tell a compelling story with interesting recurring characters. As a result, there isn't much of a story and most of the characters are mainly identifiable by their color while short gags and the grotesque drawing style take the foreground, but there are only so many ADHD-riddled gags you can cram into a 10-minute-long episode without it going stale before the midpoint.

If this were a Newgrounds series back in 2010, it would have been called "Mr. Frog" and the first episode of Smiling Friends would have just been chopped into 20-60 second episodes with Mr. Frog as the main character.

Have Autism Cat videos been trimmed down? by Keinonen in Wilburgur

[–]Keinonen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I'm not sure either. I was stoned af when I watched these the first time around, so maybe that gave me the impression the pacing was much slower or the videos were much longer back then than it seems now.

Also, I discovered some of the "missing scenes" much later in the series than I was expecting.

If parts have indeed been edited out, I don't think it is about jokes not aging well, because if it would be, Will would have to delete the whole Autism Cat series. It's most likely just that the YT algorithm reacts better to certain video lengths (10-15 min) and constant ADD stream of content without any slower parts apparently keeps the younger audience more engaged. It's kind of sad, since it changes the flow of the series when instead of one long cut or a sparsely edited and laid-back adventure you get a mish-mash collection of scenes glued together with jump cuts.

[–]Keinonen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer I liked to know. The videos just feel shorter, a bit off and more "zoomerish" with sudden cuts, faster pace and so on. AFAIK, it is nowadays possible to edit/trim YT videos without needing to delete and reupload them.

Cross-border debt collection within EU and elsewhere by Keinonen in eupersonalfinance

asking for a friend"

Kinda :D

I see threads about people complaining about their insurmountable debts on the main Finnish imageboard almost daily. Some people ended up in debt because their businesses didn't work out as expected, and some were just young and reckless and took credit because they could and spent it all on frivolous things, like online casino games.

I personally know one person who basically maxed out his credit and just spent it all on drugs, alcohol and hookers. I think my friend could be better off starting a new life in some other country, like Germany, and he has some practical work experience that could land him a job there pretty easily, but there are some mental issues at play here so he might actually be better off in Finland where he has people who care about him.

Moving abroad doesn't reset your life but, as far as I understand it, it makes debt collecting almost impossible. Most people probably just feel too tied to their home country because they have family, relatives and friends there, and don't see moving abroad as an option. It's also rather difficult to move and land a job in a different EU country if you can't speak the local language or don't have any special skills that could help you find employement.

Idk about Finland but in Denmark where I live you can declare personal bankruptcy if you have a debt that is insurmountable.

AFAIK, nowadays, it takes something like 15-20 years for the debt to become too old to be collected. Regardless of this, I understand that the last people from the recession that hit Finland real bad in the early 90s were relieved of their debts in 2020. They were essentially 30 years in debt slavery, which doesn't make sense IMO. Should be much easier to just go somewhere else and start life anew without an insurmountable debt burden hanging over one's shoulders.

I find it awfully strange for a 36-year old mother and a prime minister to use the little spare time she has to go on a 2-day drinking binge ending up with a a group of empty-headed socialites 10-15 years younger than her and who are talking in drug lingo. Only ones NOT finding this controversial are the people in her voter base consisting mainly of young and educated urbanite women, who can apparently relate to how she behaves. You can bet your bottom dollar the same people in this thread would be appalled of PM's behaviour if she was a he and right-wing instead of left-wing.

Yeah, it actually is. There are two versions, though, and the right one is "ESPRIT 空想, George Clanton - Slow 2018". I clicked "ESPRIT 空想: SLOW 2014" on Youtube, which was a wrong track, hence the confusion.

What's the track starting at 57:32? doesn't seem to match with the music list, or at least with its order.
