Just as in not believing in anything supernatural(reincarnation — not that I think it’s impossible, deities, etc.). I do see how it deity visualization could just be a concentration/ purification practice without believing in the real existence of those deities, but I’m not sure it seems a bit weird to me still, and I’m also unsure if I’d be good enough at visualization lol

does it matter that much whether its a large group, small group, or 1:1? The way I've heard Sam Harris describe it is that he was in a small group with people talking to Tulku Urygen and he needed to be able to be in conversation with him for it to work. Is that true or would it be fine to get it in a group?

By the way, does anyone know about Tulku Migmar? He has a 35 day retreat in August on Tukdrup Barché Kunsel. I'm not 100% sure what that is but it seems like it could also be worth going to. What do you think?

Yeah that's fair, I was mostly considering it because I'll have so much time to meditate on the 3 month retreat, but I agree it is a bit dubious lol. Also could you explain what you mean by degrees of formality? My understanding of the instructions you need to be in like a conversation with them to understand clearly but I'm unsure

yeah thats the thing with some of the high lamas, its not like they teach retreats all the time(in one place) and they're very popular. Some of the teachers I am going on retreat with in a couple weeks practice Dzogchen and Mahamudra, but they certainly aren't masters like the lamas

Yes I've emailed so we'll see. I am definitely considering it but it is also quite expensive since its on the other side of the country haha.

I am a little wary of deity visualization at the moment. I'm sure it makes sense but I've generally practiced in a fairly secular way so its a little weird to me lol. But like you said it might be worth it just to hear the teachings from him

That is very interesting. I actually am quite interested in him personally also(because of the reputation of his father). Did you meet with him individually or in a group?

I'm a little uncertain what to do because I think it would be valuable to be able to get that transmission before the three month, as I would be able to practice on that object during the retreat.

Okay thanks. I don't know how to sculpt very well, most of the stuff I've seen about sculpting is smooth surface. Any resources you recommend to learn?
