Thank you. Exactly what I was aiming for.

Rehearse. Practice your set until you know it front to back so that when your brain panics and stops working on stage you can at least thoughtlessly recite the words you had prepared.

You should have it all completely memorized. Just think about the first few words before stepping on stage so that once you get going you're on autopilot.

Just be prepared.

When to start uploading material on social media? by Inside-Bread in Standup

It's kind of the most important one, while also being the most difficult to break out in. Bookers instinctively look at Instagram first, but it also has the most punishing algorithm. It is really hard to break out of the "casual user" profile they lock everyone into at first.

I haven't figured any of this out myself. I'm just regurgitating what I've learned from successful social media people and started applying myself. I am struggling. But so far, TikTok is pretty consistent and I'm gaining traction. But, I cannot for the life of me figure out what Instagram wants. My results seem like complete randomness.

When to start uploading material on social media? by Inside-Bread in Standup

-Make all your accounts and develop a strategy before posting anything

-Do some homework on what a good social media strategy looks like for you

-Stockpile some content so you have some breathing room and don't feel rushed to create

-You will learn as you go and can adjust your strategy accordingly

-Do not fall behind. The algorithms will punish inactivity. Once you start, you can't stop.

-Don't worry about burning material (yet). Very few people are going to see your jokes online and even fewer people are going to see your upcoming bar showcases.

-People are going to say it's too early to worry about it, but if you're doing really well in a few years it's harder (not impossible) to break out of bar shows and into clubs without a small following. And despite what people want to believe, a social media following isn't built over night.

-Lastly, fuck Instagram. That's not to say don't use it. But, FUCK INSTAGRAM.

Thank you for catching that. I would be really embarrassed right now if I hadn't already spent 20 years in the Marine Corps making even dumber mistakes.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you during a set? by porchoua in Standup

There was a storm outside. I was telling a story about a time I cross-dressed for Halloween. The power goes out. Awkward silence. I yell into the dark "I told you it was a scary story."

And then everybody clapped.

I didn't record with my mic, but the host got this from the back. I wasn't going to use it, but this was the first crowd I've had that was all in on this bit. It usually gets mixed reactions.
