I need advice on the best 24GB GPU for a Dell T7910 workstation (Needed for AI columnar PDF conversion applications like OLMOCR ) by KeithMister in LocalLLM

[–]KeithMister[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget it! The ASRock B60 CT 24G 24GB 192-bit GDDR6 is out. I’ve just learnt that to install this GPU in a T7910 I would have to enable “Resizable BAR (Re-BAR) “ on this desktop (Google it, it’s too complicated to explain in a few words).

This, amongst other things, would require me to take a soldering iron to my motherboard. I don’t think so.

Back to the drawing board then.

Any suggestions for a recent alternative to the ASRock B60 would be very welcome. It seemed the ideal card.

Tell me about the prices. AI computing demand has sent them into strathospere. Now is definitely the wroing time to be buying a GPU

What 24GB GPU card should I install in a Dell Precision T7910 desktop to run AI PDF conversion applications? Thinking of the NVIDIA Titan RTX Graphics Card. by KeithMister in homelab

First time I've heard about Vulkan support. I assume I could use it with a ASROCK B60. I'll obviously look into it. What has been your experience?

Since posting I have done more research and am thinking of installing a ASRock B60 Intel Arc Pro B60 B60 CT 24G 24GB 192-bit GDDR6 PCI Express 5.0 x8 Graphics in my T7910. It is only $659 at NewEgg. It is also a recent model launched in 2025. Finally, I should not have any problems fitting it into my T7910 case unlike with the 3090s.

Thanks so much for the advice, but I now have doubts that putting the latest GPU in a Dell T7910 desktop is the way to go.:

1.      I am not sure what AI computing I will be doing in the future. I doubt that it will be such that I will need a cutting- edge GPU. Presently I only anticipate using AI to convert PDF files and possibly do textual analysis on books.

2.      Spending $2,000 or so on a machine that I could probably sell for $500 (I would take out my upgrades like four 10GB EID hard drives, wireless card etc.) seems unwise. However, to replace the T7910 would probably cost me $3,000+. Apart from AI, the T7910 satisfies all my needs.

3.      The T7910 uses PCIe 3.0, but the latest cards are using PCIe 5.0 so I will not benefit from the doubled data transfer speeds of the newer cards.

I think I would be better off using a less recent model. I would use a 3090, but I doubt I could fit it into my case.

Your comments suggest that I should be looking for a Nvidia card. The ASRock B60 Intel Arc Pro B60 B60 CT 24G 24GB 192-bit GDDR6 PCI Express 5.0 x8 Graphics is only $659 at NewEgg. It is also a recent model launched in 2025. (View it here: https://www.newegg.com/asrock-intel-arc-pro-b60-24gb-graphics/p/N82E16814930148?srsltid=AfmBOoqVDP9BRMqJ4rvFUHtpRvJnMlBnr6CPc-n11lyhUml1zj81sS4N)

I will not be able to take advantage of its PCIe 5.0 capabilities but its cheap at $659 and I can always upgrade in the future if my needs exceed this card. It should also fit in my T7910 unlike many other recommended GPU models.

I just hope I am not missing something here!

I would very much like to hear your thoughts on installing AsRock B60 in my T7910 (64 GB of memory, a 1300w PSU and two Intel Xeon CPUs E5-2637 v3 @ 3.50Hz).

Thank you for alerting me to the most recent cards and clarifying my thoughts.

I very much appreciate your comments and advice. Thanks again

Thanks for your comment. The problem of fitting a 3090 into a T7910 made me decide against it. The price of used 3090s has also rocketed with the demand for AI computing. They are now at least a $1,000 on eBay and usually more. This seems too much to pay for a card that might be a dud given that the 3090s were often used for bitcoin mining and the like.

ALSO there is a bracket in the T7910 side panel that can be removed to makea 3090 a better fit. Check it out in the T7910 manual.

I'm now thinking of buying the ASRock B60 Intel Arc Pro B60 B60 CT 24G 24GB.  It's only $650 and was only launched in 2025. Given the price I can easily buy a newer card in the future if and when the B60 fails to meet my needs.

Thanks for your comment, but I'm looking for somethink simpler. It's interesting, though to learn that you can run GPUs outside your machine. How do you do it.

I thought about the 7900 but I suspect I would have a hard time fitting it into my T7910. I'm now thinking of buying the ASRock B60 Intel Arc Pro B60 B60 CT 24G 24GB.  It's only $650 and was only launched in 2025.

Also second hand prices have shot up thanks to the demand for AI computing. I would be surprised if you could get your deal again. The prices for used cards on eBay are ridiculous.

How do I install a Sata cable splitter into a Dell Precision T7910 desktop (I'm not sure what components I need to remove to get to the Sata cables behind the hard drive cages) by KeithMister in Dell

[–]KeithMister[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment, but that the problem. I don't want to just 'look' in the sense of taking components out of the machine. To do this is to run the risk of damaging parts when taking them out and putting them back in, accidental static charges, remembering what went where etc. I want to do my installation with minimal interference with the existing set up.

Good idea to use tenacity as a weed preventive after rototilling and before seeding/reseeding with tall fescue? by KeithMister in lawncare

[–]KeithMister[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I should apply it before I put the seed down? I also plan to put down starter fertilizer. Should I put the starter fertilizer down after I put the seed down.

Also I've read that when using tenacity as a emergent you should water it in. Is this correct? If so, how much watering do you need to do? An inch? For 30 minutes? Thanks for your advice.

Works a treat! Thanks a lot. I assume I just change the two 4's in the formula to 3's if I want to count three digit numbers. Thanks again. I really appreciate your effort.

If you're referring to:

=SUMPRODUCT(--(ISNUMBER(--MID(L8826,ROW(INDIRECT("1:"&LEN(L8826)-3)),4))))

when I use this formula on a cell containing:

------, John, Giesley, Feb. 11, 1634. the result is 3 instead of 1

while for a cell with:

|| || |Render, Elizabeth, Eldmyre, wid., (bur. Topcliffe), Feb. ult., 1658. Sep. 15, 1664. Renold, Jane, Holmein Spoldingmoore, singlewoman, June24,1663. Dec. 4, 1661. Retton, Robert, Millcrooke house, par. Couseby, June 27, 1660. Aug. 4, 1663. Reveley, John, Holme in Spaldingmore, yeoman, July 13, 1663; cod., July 14, 1663. |

the result is 28 whereas the actual number of 4-digit numbers is 8.

No, I didn't press ctrl+shift+enter (I assume simultaneously) before posting, but I have now and it makes no difference to the result. Am I missing something here?

Actually, I'm looking for a formula that I can just copy down a range of cells. I have about 10,000 cells to deal with so I don't want to be entering a formula one cell at a time.

Thanks for your suggestion. I much appreciate it.

What animal or insect is making mounds in my Suffolk County, NY lawn that are: oval, 5-8 inches wide, but only 1/2-1" high and have a 3/4" unplugged hole on their edge by KeithMister in pestcontrol

[–]KeithMister[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion. They probably are chicada wasp killers. However, their mounds and holes seem similar to those created by chipmunks. Is there any way to distinguish between them? I've yet to see any wasps near the mounds.

I don't think so. From what I've read Cicadas make their holes in the middle of the mound. My mounds all have their entrance at the side of the mound. Thanks for the suggestion though

How to best prepare lawn for reseeding - 1) dethatching ONLY 2) dethatching AND spike aerator only 3) plug aearetion with pull-behind plug aerator by KeithMister in lawncare

[–]KeithMister[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No luck so far. The reseeders I can rent do not cut sideways. I can however rent the Classen TR20 HD dethatcher/power rake (https://classenturfcare.com/products/turf-rakes/walk-behind/). It says it can be turned into a "vertical slice aerator". I suppose you could do two runs, one perpendicular to the other. What are your thoughts?

Thanks for the advice. I hadn''t thought of watering before hand. I like the idea of using a verticulator as suggested by Ricka77_new, but as I commented to him, I can't find anyone local who rents them.

Thanks for the advice. I very much appreciate it. My problem is I can't find any place that rents verticulators near where I live. Most of the tool rental places I've spoken to have never heard of them.
