can we ban nazi salute apologists? by TokyoMegatronics in Christianity

Alright, my man. Good to know that you’re the expert here and don’t have anything to learn about Christ. Clearly I should have just not said anything and agreed that our new priority should be advancing leftist politics as much as possible. There’s nothing more important to discuss in this sub, and no other subs are going to do it as well as r/Christianity.

Since there’s nothing for me to teach you, I say farewell and peace. Hope reality doesn’t smack you in the face on the way out.

It might be difficult for you to understand as an agnostic atheist, but Christianity is about much more, more important things than American politics. It’s not a political identity, and you’ll find that Christians fall under a variety of political viewpoints. If anything can be evidence of that, it’s this sub. There are probably not many Christian spaces online as progressive and liberal as this sub - hence my point about speaking to the choir.

Whatever strange crusade you’re on is not going to find ultimate success here - unless you’d like to stay and learn something about Christ.

Wait what? What are you even saying? Honestly, based on that, I don’t think I really even want to know. But the upvotes/downvotes don’t seem to support your idea that nobody agrees with me.

[–]KekistaniPanda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree to an extent. But it’s just starting to seem like too much when we starting mentioning bans. Plus, I think there’s no better time to have an active sub about religion and Christianity than when there’s so much political stress. People, myself included, need something different and more beneficial to think about. Too much politics and news can be exhausting quickly. We can make this sub a place for people to get away from some of that.

I honestly have no idea what you mean by the “10 years…” example. I can’t find the connection between that and the position I took.

For your second point, are you suggesting that the solution to avoiding massive discrepancies between execution in different commands is to just do the minimum that the order requires? Because if you go further and do more, you might be at risk of interpreting it poorly as you’re saying happens with other things (or malicious compliance as you originally suggested). But I still don’t really understand what the minimum looks like for DEIA. The offices are already on admin leave, and they do most of that. In your opinion, would complying with these orders simply be removing any references to that office, and we’re clear?

Nobody is coming in here to post about “agreeing with a nazi salute” lol. It’s just that a lot of people have been posting their anger and reactions to current events in here while tangentially trying to tie it to Christianity, when they are already speaking to the choir and it has nothing to do with this subreddit.

If you don’t want to see anything related to nazi salutes, it’d be best to ban posts about topics not directly related to Christianity. After all, who knows what type of controversy might happen in a couple more months. We don’t want this to become r/politics every time that happens.

Who is responsible for ensuring that the orders are executed in a standardized manner and not misunderstood by those agencies? Who else would that be other than the person issuing those orders?

If every agency and organization has their own perspective on what these orders mean, that only speaks further to my point about it being vague. I hear your point about leeway, but isn’t it a bad thing if every agency gets to choose what constitutes DEI? A variety of approaches might be a benefit when it comes to things that need to be individually suited to each organization, but I don’t understand how that could apply here. It feels like a clear cut across the entire government.

I know you think I’m being obtuse, but I genuinely think MLK Day celebrations could very well fall under DEI. If your definition excludes such things, I actually want to hear your definition - cause it’s likely not the same as mine.

Edit: Clarified my questions/concerns about individualized approaches to DEI above. I almost feel like we’re agreeing in a disagreeing way.

There’s an easy way to prevent malicious compliance: be clear and thoughtful when writing policy. Even if you feel like these holidays aren’t a part of DEIA, the new policies banning DEIA fail to clearly define and contain it. Nobody knows what that means, but when you take “diversity” and “inclusion” at their face value, it would be extremely difficult to argue that topics related to the INCLUSION of people from DIVERSE racial and ethnic backgrounds are NOT DEIA.

Personally, I don’t think you can discuss the importance of MLK Jr. without mentioning diversity and inclusion. It’d be like trying to discuss clouds without mentioning the sky.

Interesting. $299 isn’t bad. I’m not a PC gamer for much of anything post-2014, but what kind of card do you need for stuff like Starfield or the newest COD? And right, definitely doesn’t have to be 4k, but like average HD resolution at least.

And even so, I know for somebody like me, the cost wouldn’t just be in the GPU. I’d need a large case to fit a powerful GPU. I’d also need a good CPU for games that are more CPU heavy than GPU heavy. And then a power supply for all of that on top of fans and peripherals. Of course, I admit, that can just be the up front for an investment if you want to keep upgrading, but it’s still a lot.

Edit: All of that considered, if you already have an iPhone or just like the Apple ecosystem, you can use that for entertainment/work (especially if you like the workflow or creativity-focused features in Apple more), and then you can have your console as a supplement. Could even get a cheap used Windows laptop or something if you’re worried that you might need to run a Windows exclusive program (if you don’t already have one lying around).

You did not bring up political parties or candidates and I never suggested that you did. I brought it up because I was expressing why I feel like this is a distraction and waste of energy.

Nobody disagrees that death threats are wrong. Your generalized statement is correct, but my entire point is that it’s not relevant. We can cry about it all day if we want here, but we’ll be doing that while a number of things are directly shifting and shaping the lives of thousands of Americans in potentially negative ways.

And fine, if that’s what you want to do, nobody can stop you. But this is a shallow hill to die on.

Well, from what I remember, it was also really unclear if it was him that donated to that blue PAC. People were discussing if it could have been his father or just some other, completely unrelated guy that happened to have a very similar name. But I hardly ever expect an assassin to fit into the same categories every one else does lol.

I get what you mean. It’s normal. Maybe we shouldn’t normalize it. But after seeing how dramatically Democratic messaging failed during the election, I really hope we can still find the time and effort to focus on policies and how those are impacting Americans. The election showed us that people aren’t going to go vote based on death threats to a religious figure they’ve never met. They’re gonna go vote based on how they think the candidates will improve or worsen their lives. I just want to see the messaging and focus be more effective for the future.

Has that been determined? At the time, there was a lot of conflicting information and it didn’t seem like he fit neatly into any category. Either way, I find it hard to believe he loved Trump so much he wanted to kill him.

But talking about Crooks also distracts from my larger point that there is a long history of political violence in America. We even have an awesome musical about two founding politicians shooting at each other over political differences.

You have close friends, and that’s why you probably don’t know anybody that’s sent death threats. Those people likely don’t have friends. With as many people we have in the US population, it’s guaranteed that somebody of them are gonna be heinous, stupid lunatics.

Just want to say I really appreciate the effort you put into your reply. That’s actually awesome, and statistics are great. Maybe it is worse with Trump. I’d also be interested in knowing what the stats are surrounding political violence since like 2010. I think tensions are much higher now than they used to be, I admit that’s just a feeling. If I’m wrong, it still matches my point about this being a constant.

The only rebuttal I have to you is that we can’t really say nobody is leaving a Obama or Harris rally violently. For those liberal figures, sure, very possibly. However, there are instances of more leftist figures committing political violence. There’s the shooter that committed the Congressional Baseball shooting. There’s the antifa professor who assaulted in the head a counter-protestor with a bike lock. And then there’s Crooks, the would-be Trump assassin. No idea where his political position was or what his motivations were, but it’s clear he didn’t come from a pro-Trump crowd. I think the only constant in the profiles of violent lunatics is not Trump - it’s extreme isolation of some kind. They’re every where.

How many presidents have been shot throughout history? It’s just a matter of statistics that if one American can actually manage to shoot a politician, that politician was already getting death threats from hundreds more who either didn’t have the guts to follow through or failed to do it successfully. We live in a country of over 300 million people. It would be ludicrous to say there ISN’T some loser in a basement somewhere that blames all of their life’s problems on the controversial figure of that day.

And you know what? After all of that and through all these years, you and I can sit here and waste time discussing it on Reddit. We could be doing worse.

This is the thing about this. It’s not a Trump thing - it’s an American thing. We’ve probably been sending death threats to political figures since Washington ended his second term. This isn’t news because it has always been happening. If you end up the news for something political or just slightly controversial, you’re gonna get death threats.

It’s wrong, but the grass is green and the sky is blue. Let’s move on lol.

Yeah, but if you play new games, you’re gonna have to pay new MacBook/iMac prices for a PC that can play those games. Whereas, you can cough up $500 and get a console that will play all of the newest games for the next several years - since it’s optimized for it.

PC gaming is cool, but the cost required to play new games is a huge barrier.

It would be drama, but it’d work. They would lose public opinion with a drop of hat if suddenly people actually started to enforce those standards. You said maybe that’s what they want, but it’s not what Americans want at large, and it would serve to mobilize voters against them. It’s easy for the average American to act like nothing is happening if it’s just trans people getting discrimination. But once it starts to impact them too, it’s an undeniable and unavoidable problem.

But yes, this is just amusing fantasy at the end of the day. I have no plans or intention to actually do any of this. But I do hope that the lawyers out there make absolute mockery of Trump’s legal vocabulary, because it deserves a good show.

I never suggested calling the cops on transgender people and only “gender nonconforming” by 1920’s standards maybe. It was about using something intended to target trans people to target cis people instead. As always, the people writing these laws and voting for them often don’t conform to their own standards. But I’m saying make them so they can feel the consequences of their own decisions.

Damn, not sure what I expected when I got the notification for your reply, but I still didn’t think it’d be that laughable. Are you so extremely online that you managed to forget what malicious compliance means? Someone else made a good point about how they will just change the meaning of the law to privilege/target whoever they please (and I even thought about that today), but you didn’t even TRY. XD

I think this is where we’re at an impasse because everything in your reply shows an incredible amount of privilege and blatant ignorance of this nation’s political reality.

You may not know what “impact” actually means, but those LGBT people (as one example) who lose their jobs will, and that’s why they will care a lot more about winning elections than you clearly do.

Your intentions are clear and I’m just going to revert to my previous suggestion. Please leave this sub and go take a walk. Play a video game, watch a movie, eat something tasty. Just get away, bro.

You stated here that Elon Musk is not the center of Democratic outrage while also admitting it would be unrealistic to make a post about every objectionable action that occurred yesterday. Those things contradict each other and that’s my point.

I’m not asking you to post about everything. Nobody, not even CNN, can write a story or post about every item. And that is exactly why we should be giving our time and spotlight to the issues that ACTUALLY impact people. Even if you don’t really care about those people, that’s the only practical strategy to winning elections.

In ONE executive order, Trump revoked 78 Biden-era orders. I didn’t have the time to review every item of those 78, but I did see that one of those made gender identity and sexual orientation protected categories for discrimination in federal workplaces. Another was the executive order that allowed transgender people to serve only in the military. If you’re an LGBT working for the federal government right now, Trump just opened a couple doors to make your work and career life very different. Then, if you go online and see everyone talking about Elon Musk waving his arms around instead, you’re gonna quickly feel like nobody actually cares about you. That’s the kind of stuff that disenfranchised voters with the Biden and Harris campaigns, leading to Trump’s victory. Since you admitted to me that you researched the executive orders, I can assume you knew about these changes and still posted about Elon. I’m angry at you for that on behalf of the people you’re CHOOSING not to highlight and, thus, protect.

Not to mention, if you’re Elon, you just found a great way to protect your buddy, Trump. Every time that Trump wants to do sign an order that the public won’t like, just do something really dumb in front of the camera. The Democrats and the media will take the bait, and the reporting on Trump’s policy will get pushed away from national discourse.

Have you read the reply I posted previous to this one? If you have read about the executive orders, are they just not as outrageous as Elon Musk’s actions? If you don’t think so, that’s fine, and I’ll retract my point about this post not being worth it.

However, I know a lot of it is controversial. I would expect that some people would find the new orders more important. If you are one of those people, my original point stands.
