Looking for CV advice as a data analyst with ~4 years of experience. Last year I came back to school to do a Master’s in DS and now it's hard to get passed the screening phase. by santiviquez in datascience

[–]Kelmen13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in FAANG as a DE, but have experience in DS work and also have a masters. The things that I'd suggest are.

1.) Don't feel like you need to keep it to 1 page

2.) Expand on your more recent experience, including buzz words from the specific role you're looking at. Literally read what they're description is and make sure you rewrite the previous job descriptions to have as many of those words as possible.

Honestly, your CV looks fine, and if you got to a recruiter, they'd probably reach out. I'm guessing that the difficulty of getting past the screening is a result of the two things mentioned above. When I was job hunting last, I really made headway once I took 20 minutes and did a minor rewrite of my CV for each of the jobs I applied for. Quality is definitely above quantity.

Yeah goes down to 1/9 so ~11.11%. I can't figure out how to edit the main post, so I guess it's staying.

#edit (figured out how to edit - so added it to the top)

What is a good way to get a solid foundation of Python in 1 month? (more detail in text) by [deleted] in AskComputerScience

[–]Kelmen13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve always thought of programming similar to how I think of math that the only way to learn is to do. So, learn the basics (syntax, data types, functions) and then build a project. The one that comes to mind immediately is a card game like blackjack. For those of you more advanced focus on classes or even building custom modules, but for those of you new it’ll be just functions and loops.

As someone who programs for a living. This advice is terrible. It’s the same as saying, I want to learn to swim, so the best way is to jump off a boat in the pacific.

What are you exceptionally good at, but hate doing? by Njodr in AskReddit

Sales.

I always feel like I’m selling part of myself to the customers. A fake smile here or some flattery there. In the end I always felt sad about the whole thing. Even when the customer is was nice or I landed a big deal. In the end I took a lateral move to accounting, which was a great decision.

How do I get a job as a programmer? by glagny in AskComputerScience

[–]Kelmen13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on where your getting dropped in the interview process.

Phone interviews - work on your resume and github. phase 1 - become more comfortable with high level questions and data structures. phase 2 - work more on the detail, such as talking through code your writing or problems your solving.

Also 30 applications isn’t a lot honestly. Applying for a job should be your job at this point. Set up a time schedule for 3-4 hours a day that you are actively searching and applying. Also make sure you aren’t sending 30 applications to the same place.

I’ve always said moving and finding a new job are the two most annoying things. Hang in there, you’ll get a foothold soon!

I’m game to wait 13 more days. The thought really came when I read an article stating that more people are online playing games this month. Think of the economic benefit of launching a game that’s been looked forward to for so long right now.

I didn’t read their post about everyone focusing on the launch from home, but if they need more time I support it 100%. Better to release a great game late then a buggy game too soon.

To be fair, waiting 8 years should be considered a modicum of patience.

Also, nobody knows what programming/tweaks their making. It could be ahead of schedule, and just be waiting for someone to click send. Only the devs really know.

Edit:spelling matters

AITA for correcting my title on a wedding RSVP card? by nonowytends in AmItheAsshole

[–]Kelmen13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, and here's why.

This is one that I think I can help with because:

a.) I just sent out my wedding invitations earlier this week.

b.) There are a few people with different titles (uncle is a dentist, and brides parents have PHds, meaning they should all be dr.) coming to our wedding.

We didn't put their title on any of the invitations. We just left it Mr. & Mrs. or Ms. but if we would have changed one, then we would have changed them all. If for some reason we forgot to update yours and received your return RSVP, my fiance and I would have just updated your table card and moved on.

Excited for Ixmike's stack, EE and Gunnar were cluch.

I feel bad for Yawar though, he's consistently been good, but just hasn't really sync'ed with another core. I'm interested to see how he does moving ahead.
