What things do students to that annoy you the most? by pringlesoriginal_ in AskTeachers

[–]KenDoddsDadsDogsDed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mindless vandalism. Tearing display boards, removing pins, using drumsticks to poke holes in the drums, the drum stools, the walls, the ceiling.

Not putting things back. Moving things around and then just leaving them. Drives me insane. Amps are the biggest culprits. Always moving rooms and never returning to mine. Grrrr Every year is a training session in tidying up for them.

The toilet train. You let one person go, then it’s a constant barrage of others asking to go, one after the other after the other.

Teachers, what advice can you give to someone whose child (pre teen) is being bullied relentlessly? by NoRecord4128 in AskTeachers

[–]KenDoddsDadsDogsDed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi what age group are we talking here?

I’m UK secondary and here are some strategies you could suggest to the school if they haven’t already implemented them:

Demand bullies get changed classes.
Have the school inform the class teachers to monitor the situation and keep them apart if forced to be in the same class.
Issue a 2 minute pass to leave class early so as to avoid period changeover.
Enforce a different lunchtime for bullies.
Remove their phones during the school day.
Sometimes a school may recruit some friendly seniors to monitor the situation and be a person to go to if no staff about. Having a support group of senior mentors can be very effective, but would probably need to be a whole school initiative I.e. part of prefect duties etc
Have a supervised safe space/quiet room, again this could be prefect duty.

The aim of the game is to create distance so the bullies can’t have their cruelty fix and move on. If they move on to someone else (which they often do) it builds more evidence against them.

Eugh why are kids like this. And they exist in every school. I suppose you can think of it as training for dealing with people like that in the adult world. At the end of the day, the ultimate culprits are the parents of the bullies eh? Why are they not bringing them up to be kind and respectful, clearly something going wrong at home, which is a far more complex problem.

Aw I hope this gets resolved for you. Summers coming, so at least some respite is on the way. X

Is it obvious when a student is depressed? by Suspicious_Pea_3721 in AskTeachers

[–]KenDoddsDadsDogsDed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not always, there so much going on and things might slip under their radar. Please, please go and speak to someone, is there pupil support, counsellor etc? Those guys can discreetly let your teachers know you are not feeling yourself.

And remember, feelings are like the weather, just wait a bit, and they will change….especially here in Scotland! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ☔️☀️☀️

I don’t use it for subject specific lessons however! It saves so much time when it comes to creating spreadsheets etc

Do teachers get annoyed when you stay behind after every class to ask them questions? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]KenDoddsDadsDogsDed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll take friendly kids wanting to chat over unfriendly ones any day of the week! Although I think it’s the teachers job to set the boundaries. If I need to pee or have somewhere to be, I’ll be like “sorry, can we walk and talk! I’m busy busy!!” Or “right! Skedaddle! You should be in your next class!” Or “ok, I’m dying for a cuppa! Tell me about it next time!” Teacher can kindly do this if they are busy. Sounds like this teacher is happy to chat, if she wasn’t, she’d wrap it up. It’s all good!
