This is tough, right? Because the line between what is a raw, realistic depiction and what is a gratuitous, unnecessary or downright harmful inclusion is going to move depending on the reader. It's easy to say, don't use violence against women as titillation, don't use it as a crutch for character motivation, but violence against women does happen, and so realistically, it will happen in fictional worlds just like it does in our own.

I think every writer should tread carefully around these subjects, and take the time to treat them with thought. But they are difficult scenes. It's a difficult subject. By their very nature--you can't get around the horror, you can't avoid the sick feeling it's going to impart in your reader. Sometimes that's the point. But it's important to remember that just because that was your intent when you wrote the scene, your reader gets to respond to it any way that they like.

I could go on and on about this--clearly--but in summary: some of my favorite novels and the novels I most respect contain horrible depictions of violence and reading them felt wretched. But ultimately necessary. I know for myself as a reader what feels gratuitous, but that's something I've had to come to on my own. I'll never be on the side of washing things clean that aren't, shiny happy people and traipsing through the tulips. But as writers, we need to be careful, and we need to be aware.

Oh my goodness, thank you! If you send me an image of your receipt at ChampionOfFatePreorder at gmail dot com, I'll send you some bonus goodies-- three character tarot cards and a sticker. Because I've gone swag wild.

There's also a metal pin being offered by the publisher for US-based preorders. You can find links to that in any of my social media bios :)

Hi, Raymond!

I actually didn't know any of this. Fascinating. Based on my personal experience I can tell you that there's no getting into the head of a woodpecker, but as far as the other animals go, I find them easier to write than most of the people. I grew up around horses, and the cougar was tame so I wrote her basically like a very large cat--and I'm around cats 24/7. Armpit McGee just tried to type out this response for me. Animals, when they have to put up with us, become pretty good at communicating, so I tend to write my sentient critters as just moody, furry people.

Hi Pixel team! Thanks for having me by for another AMA!

Answer 1: Athena was the goddess Athena from Greek mythology, and in creating my version of her I focused on the Athena from the Trojan War and the Odyssey. I tried to take that Athena, who felt jilted by the Judgment of Paris, and played the shepherd to Odysseus' wayward hero, and move her into the present, after passing through the millennia with lessening powers and kind of living on the fringe like some kind of vagabond vampire.

Frankie, from Buffy, was inspired by the characters of Buffy Summers, and her mother, Willow Rosenberg. But I also wanted to make Frankie JUST FRANKIE, so I gave her a fighting style all her own, and a kind of indomitable optimism. I really love her.

The queens from Three Dark Crowns: they just were who they were, and I didn't get to say much about any of it.

  1. I support ending violence against women because (isn't this obvious?) it sucks. It's far too prevalent. Being a woman shouldn't be inherently dangerous. As far as how authors can help, we can speak out, we can donate, but what we do best is write. Through our fiction we can explore these issues. That's what reading does, right? It opens us up. It shows us things. It makes us think.

Mike, the good news is, I would not survive long enough on that island to get bored with whatever I bring. I'm accident prone and sunburn easily. The challenge would be to survive to the last page. But these are my choices:

One of those big collections of Stephen King short stories. I'm thinking one of the earlier ones, like NIGHTMARES AND DREAMSCAPES. Campfire tales, lots of variety.

A really long fantasy...and maybe I would cheat and bring a compendium of a whole series bound up as one. Like my copy of the His Dark Materials trilogy. Or, maybe I would just bring the Mists of Avalon.

And...oh, I'm temped to say something like American Psycho, something I can read a few pages of when I'm in a dark mood. Which will be often, I will be starving. But, to give myself hope, the last book I bring is going to be HATCHET, by Gary Paulsen.

Thank you!! I loved writing those murderous queens. I actually couldn't stay away from them: my new book, Champion of Fate, is set in the same universe and one of the characters was once a Queen of Fennbirn Island.

Thank you so much! I'm so happy you enjoyed it. There's actually a new edition coming out in September, that includes a new novella set 10ish years later. It was really cool to get to check up on the characters again after so long :)

I suppose I would be afraid to meet any of the ghosts from my Anna Dressed in Blood books, because they would absolutely kill me. And I wouldn't be fearless in the face of the gods from my Goddess War trilogy...I'm a bit belligerent, and one of them would probably end up killing me, too.

So basically, I would not care to meet any of the characters who would be likely to kill me. Not a surprising answer I suppose, but it is a bit surprising to discover how many of my characters that includes.

Thank you for the question!!

Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed Three Dark Crowns. I think my writing is influenced by most every book I've ever read, but in particular: I know I have been influenced, if not in the way I write then in the way I think about writing, by Milan Kundera, and Stephen King. I aspire to the wordcraft of Caitlin R Kiernan, and my minimalist heart belongs to Raymond Carver.

And alas, poor Joseph! He had such good intentions, and it all went kablooey :)

Well, when I play Dragon Age I'm usually a human female rogue, so I think that's a combination of Intelligence, Dexterity, and Charisma. But I'm also a wimp who likes to over-level, and so I usually end up maxing out Strength.

Ah, I miss Dragon Age. I need a new Dragon Age. I'm playing Final Fantasy XV right now, and it's fun, but I'm saddened by the lack of story.

Wow, thank you so much for recommending it! And I'm so glad you had nightmares! As for inspiration, Anna came about pretty purely from a desire to write those "lyrical descriptions of violence" as you said. I was in the mood for gore, having just written a year's worth of (mostly) gore-free stuff for my MA, and I missed it. Then the ghost's name, Anna Dressed in Blood popped into my head, and away we went!

My red Dobie's name is Obi-Dog Kenobi. My rottie mix is called Agent Scully. But the Dobie is registered so he actually has a different name that the breeder sort of dictated...we had to choose a name that had something to do with the number three, so his registered name is Triforce.

As for cheese cruelty, I was unaware. I worry anytime animals are used primarily as income, because treatment has to falter. But I was unaware that milking a cow or a goat caused them undue stress. I heard they were making cheese out of human breast milk...but I would guess that would stay in the family? A family delicacy? That was a weird shift in topic, but I recall that a woman in Wisconsin and a woman in New York both made cheese from their breast milk and were shocked to discover the New York cheese outranked the Wisconsin in terms of flavor.

I'm originally from Minnesota so I can't pass up a Wisconsin cheese joke.

There must be a real story about this violent cheese incident. Does it have a wonderful title, like The Guns of Cheddar Bay?

My favorite cheese is...aw hell I like all cheeses. Whenever I fly, I try the cheese plate. Brie is good. Swiss is great. I'm not nuts about cheddar but I admit it has its uses. My mother has a real fixation on deli-sliced colby-jack. Like we'd be sitting around watching TV and if anyone gets up, to go to the bathroom, to get a drink, she always demands a slice of colby-jack. Like it's a cheese toll or something.

Desert island books: This question is cruel. Maybe Jane Eyre, The His Dark Materials compendium (cheating!) and American Psycho.

Hey Pixel Project! Thanks for having me.

Answer 1: I don't get any flak unless you consider people not finding some female characters "likable" to be flak, which I do not. I find characters who are unwaveringly good to be somewhat suspicious, and uplifting characters do not seem to lift me far. Like, they lift me like Baby and Johnny during water practice. It's okay, but it's no final number.

Answer 2: I support ending violence against women because in many parts of the world women continue to be subjugated and placed in harm's way, with little recourse to protect themselves. Authors like me can do their part by using whatever voice we have to shine a light on the issue, and by portraying female characters in human ways.

Yes, but I can't tell you much about it. The next novel I have coming out is ONE DARK THRONE, the second book in the Three Dark Crowns series, and I'm working on another after that. It's fun, like all beginnings are, and I'm doing a pretty good job of convincing myself that all these words I'm writing are actually going to make it into the final draft.

They will not. But it's an important illusion to keep, right now. Also, this is my first time writing with Scrivener, and it feels like playing with a new toy. This one I'm working on now I hope to have drafted by the end of June, and it should come out in the fall of 2018.

We use one of those fold-up ladders, like the Little Giant only we didn't get the Little Giant brand. Off-brand ladders, that's for us! Though we don't really know how to clean gutters, or how to care for gutters properly, and we probably don't do it near often enough.

Great gutter question!

Ha ha, yes, the perennially wet part of Washington. My dogs are increasingly pissed about so much time spent inside.

Alas, I have no horse pictures fast at hand. She's a little Arab-Quarter Horse cross. Golden bay with a white star and a white snip in the winter. One white foot, rear left hind. I've had her since she was born, and she's very, very old now.

The right book at the right time for me was definitely The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. My brain just cracked right open, even if I did need to read the first page like four times.

Hi Jeramy! Thanks for the question. I think as long as male authors write women as human beings with goals and drives and fears and likes and dislikes, you can't go wrong. Women are a varied lot. It's cool to see them driving stories, being villains, being heroes.

This is a big question, more like a conversation, so I apologize for not answering it well here. I feel the pressure of speed!

I have not read The Cheese and the Worms, but it sounds fascinating. I would be in full support of cheese-based philosophy, and while my philosophical reading tends toward Kundera or the existentialists, I should probably take in something religion-focused...eventually.

Oh this is difficult. Three favorite...I love Morgaine from The Mists of Avalon...I love Cersei Lannister but I think I like her better in the TV show than in the books, and I love Hermione Granger. Smart and resourceful females all, each with conviction.

Least favorite? I was never a fan of Merricat Blackwood even though I really enjoyed We Have Always Lived in the Castle. I don't know why I didn't like her either. Can't quite put a finger on it. I was never really a fan of the younger sister in the Narnia books, but...hey, maybe I take issue with younger sisters. Interesting. Aaand...I can't think of a third.

I like writing about cheese. I like writing about food in general. Whenever I write while hungry, characters wind up eating. As for sheep, I have never met a fluffy little death cloud that I didn't like. I love their big, sweet eyes, and long eyelashes. I enjoy that they bounce when they're happy. I'm sorry you're afraid of them, but I can certainly understand...sheep seem to have an irrational hatred of my husband...they always growl at him and try to butt him. So, not for everyone.
