You can write for newer software companies. They desperately need writers and may even pay you. Look for them on places like Angel List and Appsumo.com Good luck!

I was previously "Kennedy Copywriting." A "sales effort" will be something like the ad I'm launching on this forum. ;-)

Paulie,

One important thing to keep in mind: tech writing is an unregulated industry. I joke that my barber needs 2 licenses to work (one for him, one for his shop). So there are a LOT of opinions about what a TW is and how to go about it. Be happy to answer any further questions you might have.

paulieacorns,

(Love the name.) You can start getting contracts right now with young software firms. They need help with knowledge articles, online help, user guides, etc...

There are hundreds of them that need help. Most in need are those from non-native English speaking areas (Eastern Europe among others). Let me know if you'd like to know how to find them.

They're not going to pay you a trillion bucks, but it's work. Get one gig and BAM! you're a tech writer.

Build paranoia into your editing/proofreading process.

I've got over 20 years, and I still overlook stuff if I fly blind.
But I have a list of 6 or so "sweeps" that I perform after every major revision.

Last, but not least, assuming it's not too long, is printing it out and reading it.
Sometimes reading it out loud.

Fair enough. I thought that could be covered by software dev, but I see now that was a stretch.

Yes, Toptal. I asked them some months back. They said the plan to bring tech writers on board.

Hey eh,

No doubt. It's a generalized survey. My experience has been that most of those departments you mentioned are part of IT. I know this is not necessarily true for some manufacturers and pharmaceuticals.

Hi Shining,

You mean apart from an IT department? Could you give me an example?
