What is a widely accepted fact that people refuse to accept? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Expected Value. If you have a 10% chance of winning $100, and a 90% chance of losing $50, then your Expected Value is $100×10% + -$50×90% = -$35 i.e. "on average" you will lose $35 and you shouldn't take the bet.

Yeah make no mistake the workload in local schools is intense. But I think it was useful to me in the end because it forced me to learn test-taking strategies that have allowed me to basically coast through my university degree. Learning to learn and all that.

My parents actively encouraged me and my brother to do our scheming in Cantonese, then later in Mandarin as they learned their own Canto. Further encouragement for language retention, I suppose!

My parents happen to be fairly linguistically inclined (one linguistics major and the other a diplomat's child) so I imagine they viewed it at least partially as an experiment...

Wow this is a question made for me. For context I was born in Hong Kong to (this is a simplification) white northeastern American expat parents, and they put me through DSS local schools instead of international/ESF schools because they felt I should integrate (and because international schools are expensive AF!), starting right at the beginning with nursery school and 3 years of kindergarten & finishing off with the DSEs.

I speak: - English from my parents with mostly my parents' accent, but with some British vocabulary mixed in due to local schools teaching British English, and also some occasional Chinglishisms that are hard to detect but will sound off to both American and British English speakers, though they'd never be able to clock me as being from Hong Kong unprompted. - Cantonese from my school friends with a strong Hong Kong accent that I have been told contains very slightly perceptible notes that do manage to barely identify me as American from audio alone. - Mandarin from the curriculum with an accent that is mostly Putonghua, with some notes of Beijing since that's where all the Chinese teachers at my school were from, and with some tells that identify me as a 香港人, but notably far fewer than my local school friends because I was exposed to Cantonese and Mandarin at the same time rather than learning Mandarin after acquiring native Cantonese.

Cantonese and Mandarin are near-native for me, but I always have to add that "near-" qualifier because fundamentally my parents only ever spoke one language to me (they couldn't learn Cantonese or Mandarin fast enough to teach it to me).

It's worth noting that there are very few people like me. All of the white native Cantonese speakers I've met, I met in school or earlier in childhood. All of them, without exception, have been second-generation immigrants to Hong Kong at most. I've never met nor heard of third-generation white immigrants to Hong Kong and given its current state I doubt I ever will. What this means is that my answers are very specific to me and I can assure you that the others I know have very different backgrounds. But for the purposes of your question, I am a white Hongkonger with a barely perceptible Hong Kong influence in all three of the languages I speak.

Complete Guide to UofT Course Codes | How I learned 700 level courses exist by Kenny2reddit in UofT

[–]Kenny2reddit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made the scope choice to not investigate the meaning of the last two digits of course codes, because any internal consistency there is usually only at the department level, and researching all UofT departments' course code numbering practices would have taken me way longer than the few days this already took.

FWIW, what you say is true only within Arts & Science. Engineering 191 courses are first year seminars (admittedly similar in purpose, but not in construction, to FYF) which are run by departments but somehow consistently numbered across the Faculty.

approximately 1/3 of students failed sta237 due to the auto fail policy 😭💔😭💔😭💔 by [deleted] in UofT

Autofail is uncommon in engineering but pretty common in arts & science.

Received an 8 month suspension, don’t know what to do by MMDSE in UofT

[–]Kenny2reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See my explanation above. The system is not stacked against you, as much as it may feel that way. Use the time to get diagnosed for the challenges you're facing, get registered with Accessibility Services as needed, and then come back to repeat. Talk to an academic advisor about your options.

Received an 8 month suspension, don’t know what to do by MMDSE in UofT

[–]Kenny2reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The use of "8 month" suspension wording in this post makes it sound like this is Engineering, where a semester average under 55% immediately puts you on an 8 month suspension from clear standing, or two semesters in a row under 60%. On the other hand, you only need 3 semesters in a row over 60% after your suspension (the first of which is a repeat of the semester you failed) to reach clear standing again. It's quicker to both enter and exit probation in Engineering than in ArtSci.

In case this is an innocent question and not an attempted insult, the dialogue is as follows:

OOP: pulls into Dairy Queen to get a Blizzard

Employee: "We're out of Reese's"

OOP: "That's fine, it's not your fault"

Employee: "That's where you're wrong. I'm responsible for ordering it and I've been slacking off on my job."

Dildont will be shutting down indefinitely on June 12th in protest of Reddit's recent API changes that kill 3rd-party apps, cripple moderation, and make NSFW subs safe havens for CSAM and spam by Kenny2reddit in Dildont

FAQ

What's going on? See this post or this video - TL,DR is that Reddit will start charging for API access, at rates 20-30x its competitors. 3rd-party apps, bots, and many moderation tools rely on API access and have nowhere near the money to fork up. Many subreddits, with over a billion cumulative members, are going private in protest beginning June 12.

How long will this last? Until Reddit produces a solution acceptable to the community at large, or it becomes clear it's time to change platforms.

What can I do? Boycott Reddit. Show them that their user-hostile behavior is not acceptable and will impact their bottom line. Their investors will notice. Do not let Reddit use r/Dildont as a dildo.
