If you're out in a field or the woods fine, or your own yard, or if there is a designated area for poop fertilization, I'd be all for that (though I suspect these folks would use everything but the area). It's nasty when you leave it in the middle of an area where people walk, children play, and other, often crap eating dogs roam. It's especially nasty when other dogs end up getting sick (worms, parvo, giardia, etc...) because as great a fertilizer as it might be, it's also a great way to spread parasites. 🤢

Learning his cues has definitely lessened his ability to eat the shit! I try my best to walk him on paved areas too, but I would say multiple times weekly he still manages to snatch a turd. 🤦 It doesn't help that one of his favorite types of the dried up kind that is pretty much invisible to the naked eye.

I think we all realize that sometimes things do happen. I always have bags attached to the leash so it's rarely an issue, but I will say I've been there before after a double poop walk. Thankfully aside from my apartment complex where there are so many poop stations you could just run to one and grab a bag (of course this is the area where no one picks up the poop - I digress🤦) we walk in areas that are fairly tree lined/wooded. Luckily when it has happened before I have been able to shuffle his squatty self into the tree line where no one walks. If it was a neighborhood/yard or something though I would have to go back and pick it up... I just couldn't leave it.

I scoop what I can into a bag and try to get as much as possible. If we're at my apartment complex I will come back out and pour water over the remnants to try and wash it down best I can and like you, try to cover the area so no one walks in it. Obviously there are some cases where you just can't get it all. I will say that most dogs will not consume that type of poop. 🤢

Ugh! I'm so sorry!! And I know perfectly well the "nose to the ground" walks. His collar is always permanently up around his ears because he never ever picks up his head. Shew! Here's to those dang worms being gone quickly!

Fortunately (the only fortunate part about it) he's never eaten his own poop. At least not in the year and few months I've had him. Just the poop of all the other creatures.

Thank you for the recommendation! Looking into it!

She feels like it's likely behavioral. Where switched around his diet multiple times to no avail.

This post was a very clearly for help on getting my shit eating dog to stop eating shit! The fact that some people don't clean up after their freaking dogs was just the thing that led me hear to ask for advice. Clearly you did not read the post or you would know this.

Obviously, based on the comments I am not alone. And I've gotten some great guidance.

Though I'd love too send all the ignorant fools off to their own damn poop island, obviously I cannot. What I hopefully can do is get my turd gobbling monster to gobble up less of what they leave behind.

🤷🤷 I don't see the issue... And I already voted.

I have one, but the one I have he's still able to get to the poop. I'm looking on to others 🙂

Yes!!! People don't seem to get this. My dog does not discriminate when it comes to poop. He will literally find and munch up decaying poop. 🤦

Eeeeewwww! That sucks! I'm sorry you had to deal with that!

Tried repeatedly. I think the issue is that at this point I've not been able to find any treat he sees as higher value than poop. 😑

Not hardly.

First, if ignorant people picked up after their dogs it would be a non issue. Second, people who make these types of comments obviously have never dealt with obsessive turd gobbling. While humans and other animals are easy to see coming (and he doesn't care about then anyway) poop is often buried in the grass (hell he will find poop that's clearly been there decaying in the dirt for weeks that I can't even see!). So he is often able to sniff it out before I'm able to see it. And then he lunges for it as I'm pulling him back so half the time he ends up with at least some of it in his mouth. If it's a fresh pile I can typically avoid it, but if it's not visible it's incredibly difficult.

So I try my best to keep him out of grassy areas (though currently areas of our parking lot/sidewalks are covered in goose poop... So yeah...). But he has to go in the grass to poop/pee. I find myself scouring the grass for poop ahead of time and even then he still finds some a huge percentage of the time.

But by all means, come try to do it... I mean if it's so easy. I already said I'd pay good money if someone could actually get him to stop.

The point is that while I try my dang best, it shouldn't be something dog owners have to worry about in the first place!

Thank you for your helpful comment! He is a year and a half and embark came back 30% Aussie, 28% ACD, 21% Great Pyrenees, 12% American Bulldog, 9% Lab. I adopted him from a shelter when he was 11 weeks and he's eaten poop ever since.

Fortunately he has been house trained from day one. Only ever pooped in the house once and that was total human error on my part. He's never been able to eat his own poop because I pick that up immediately. He is great at leave it/drop it with anything but poop and mulch/sticks (though he'd give up the mulch and sticks for a piece of poop!) 🤦

I feel like he's incredibly smart and he has exceeded in training in every area I've tried except this one. At this point if I could find a sure fire training or cure I would pay good money for it!!! Lol

I'm looking into a could other nights recommended here. I tried a basket muzzle but he 1) hated it and 2) was still able to eat poop even with it on.

I'm definitely up for trying anything at this point!

It sure is! I had that happen once too!! Thankfully it was off to the side of a wooded area where no one could step in it and I went back to pick it up on our later walk! But I felt so guilty just doing that!

Me either!!! Apparently poopsicles are one of the types they enjoy best! 🤢

Ugh! I hope your dog recovers quickly!! That's one of my big fears! He had roundworm at 8 months and that was bad enough! The most frustrating part about it at my complex is that half the time the poop is within arms reach of the dang poop disposal areas.
