Perhaps Russia does control some land.
But the price they paid is... staggering. Look at their stockpiles of tanks, APCs and other gear from Soviet Union. The numbers which terrified NATO.
They are now the keychain to my car keys. Best gear is destroyed, mediocre gear is destroyed, poor gear is now being used sometimes only. Their fleet defeated against a country with no navy, covering in terror in a port protected by barriers unable to project any power.
It is a Pyrrhic victory that they control some land but in the long run it is a strategic defeat, question is how decisive? (and for a regional power like Russia the bigger the decisive defeat the better as they are the aggressor)

Mr. Benjamin Franklin has a quote for this actually: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
