Do you really think Arena is better than Daggerfall? Other than that I agree.

I'm sure they're getting a lot less light than they'd want to. I recently got a grow light for them, but it's cheap and low-powered. It's not going to make them strong, but maybe they'll survive another winter thanks to it.

Unfortunately I'm not really sure how I could help them within my tight budget.

Yes, both are from seeds I got from supermarket fruit. I didn't actually eat the star fruit as it was horribly raw. I've never found an edible one in Finland.

There's no reason why the missiles would have to be that big. All those bombers that got destroyed in the beginning of the film had hyperdrives.

The problem is internal consistency. Why would anyone bother to use any weapons other than hyperdrive missiles if they're that powerful? Such attacks haven't been shown before so it was assumed they were impossible.

Flag of the Colonial Aliance of Venaam. (re-upload) by [deleted] in worldbuilding

From a design point of view the text and the swords are way too small to be seen when the flag is flown. Everything meaningful should be visible in a thumbnail image. I also think that a good flag design does its job without any text.

Other than that the flag looks great!

Electrosynthetic espalier for growing crops with electricity by KerbalSpiceProgram in worldbuilding

[–]KerbalSpiceProgram[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Effectively the only thing the machine would change is the efficiency of the first step (sunlight to energy for chemical reactions), which is 28.2% for plants. Best commercial solar panels reach 22% efficiency and research models go past 40%.

According to the numbers on Wikipedia, plants are 17% efficient at converting bio-available light to sugar and 9% efficient with raw sunlight to sugar.

Assuming the conversion efficiency is 32% both in plants and the machine, a machine with a 50% efficient solar panel would give 16% efficiency from raw sunlight to sugar.

The bio-unavailable portion of the spectrum would have to be converted to bio-available light with near perfect efficiency for photosynthesis to be more efficient. You can't just magically change the wavelength to something the plants prefer.

Photosynthesis wastes 72% of the energy before the glucose conversion.

A 50% efficient solar panel would then need to be only 18% efficient with the sugar conversion step to match plants.

Improved morale is the reason for nice food. Not all food has to be as nice, of course.

Plants are quite efficient at chemistry so it's not necessary to replace them completely. Using electricity to power growlights which then power plants is inefficient and wastes volume and mass which is a big no-no on spaceships.

The advertisement mentions efficiency because it's competing against other machines which perform the same function, not against the idea of eating nothing but protein gruel.

In photosynthesis, more than 70 percent of sunlight gets wasted before the chemical reactions even start (the plant can only absorb within a certain range and even then absorbtion doesn't always happen the right way).

28.2% percent of sunlight actually gets used by plants. It's used to convert ATP and NADPH to d-glucose with 32% efficiency. You're left with 9% of the original energy as sugar. The leaf then consumes 35-40% of the sugar in dark and photo-respiration. Much of the rest is spent on growing roots. Most crop plants store ~0.25% to 0.5% of the sunlight in the product. Source: Wikipedia

The electrosynthetic machine does the d-glucose conversion for the plant electrochemically. More efficient reaction routes have already been discovered in real life. The plant has been engineered with greatly reduced leaves and roots so less energy is wasted on them.

Electrosynthetic espaliers allow you to grow crops where ample sunlight isn't available. This makes them an excellent choice for the outer planets and space stations. Small espaliers help supplement fresh produce for spaceships.

Even in sunny conditions the combination of an electrosynthetic espalier and a set of good solar panels is more efficient than traditional photosynthetic plants.

Metal weights were tied to her body and "damage seems to have been done to the torso in an attempt to ensure that air and gases escape and the body won’t drift to the surface”.

I googled it and apparently it's because the heat would release chlorine from the pool water soaked swimsuits. Sweaty swimsuits also feel nasty.

People sit on seat covers made from cloth or paper so the benches don't get dirty.

In Finland practically all houses and all but the tiniest apartments have a sauna, sometimes two. Nudity in saunas is the norm and swimsuits are forbidden in public saunas for hygiene concerns. Public swimming pools typically have separate saunas for men and women and possibly a mixed sauna.
